December 6 HELPING OUR CHILDREN ACHIEVE DECEMBER 6TH MEETING.

Helping Our Children Achieve (H.O.C.A.) is a monthly informational support group for families of special needs children.  The next meeting will be held Wednesday, December 6th at 10 a.m. at the Millbury Public Library -- 128 Elm Street in Millbury (across from Asa Waters Mansion).

Our speaker will be David Pfeil,  a representative from DORE USA.  The DORE Program is a clinically proven drug-free permanent solution for ADHD, dyslexia, behavioral and other learning difficulties. Founded by a father to help his daughter struggling with severe dyslexia, the Dore program uses individually prescribed eye, balance, and sensory exercises to stimulate the cerebellum.  Those who would find the program of benefit include children, teenagers and adults who suffer with Learning Difficulties.

Children, age 7 and up, whose school performance does not reflect their true capability and has led to a downward trend in grades, attitude and self-confidence.
Teenagers who have continued falling behind in their schoolwork, and usually exhibit frustration or low self-esteem as a result. Very commonly their learning difficulty has eroded their enjoyment of reading and school in general, often resulting in social isolation or depressed behavior.  Adults who have long experienced their learning/attention problem and realize they are functioning below their potential. Often they are fed up with coping and are motivated by a desire to achieve more in their personal and professional lives

The goal of HOCA  is to provide families of special needs children informational resources on therapy options, counseling, education concerns, dietary and biomedical approaches.  This is not a school district sponsored group.    Participants are able to discuss common concerns, specific needs and gather information on various treatments, therapies and other related issues.  There is no charge for any meeting

If you have relevant information to share with the HOCA group or are a medical professional, therapist or work in a profession dealing with special needs families contact Mary Romaniec at 508/839-9599 or Mromaniec@aol.com

December 6 On Wednesday, December 6, 2006, Hopkinton HPTA and MS/HS has invited MTV Celebrity and internationally renowned youth motivational speaker, Jeff Yalden, to speak and we’d like to request your presence to cover this extraordinary event that promises to be a defining moment for our youth. Some background information on Jeff: Jeff Yalden is from Sagamore Beach, MA and has spoken to more than 3,000 youth audiences in all 50 states and representing over 48 different countries.  His timely message about life and purpose is delivered with humor and hard-hitting honesty to high school and middle school-aged students around the world. A solid motivator and educator, Jeff Yalden is a role model for youth with which he is comfortable: Yalden has spent the last twelve years touring the world, coaching and delivering his highly motivational speech to youth, educators and parents to make better life and family choices.  He has saved lives and impacted youth to live a life of purpose and commitment. So effective is Yalden's work, in fact, the National Speakers Association has awarded him its highest honor. In 2002, the organization granted Yalden the title of Certified Speaking Professional. Less than 7% of professional speakers worldwide carry the designation.  Also, MTV called his show their best show in the six seasons of taping MTV MADE.  His show was the longest running show seen by over 70 million youth. As an author, Yalden has six books to his credit: They Call Me Coach (ISBN ), Keep it Simple: A Teenager's Handbook for Life (ASIN B0006RT7MY, Yalden Books, 2001), Traits of a Leader, 20 Ways to Keep it Simple and Pathway to Purpose (ISBN 097474820X, Yalden Press Publications, 2004). He has also co-authored Lead Now or Step Aside (ISBN 0965144747, Chespress Publications, 2000) and is a contributing author of the New York Times best-seller A Cup of Chicken Soup for the Soul (ISBN 1558744215, HCI, 1996). To encourage young people to think before they act, Yalden also created the popular "Take Time To Think" wristbands. Formerly a two-time Marine-of-the-Year and Mr. New Hampshire Male America, Yalden draws upon his own life experiences to reach out to students. “You can’t be angry about yesterday’s circumstances.  However, you can choose to accept the past and make better choices today to make the circumstances of tomorrow more fulfilling, meaningful, and rewarding,” Yalden states. The agenda for the day is as follows:

7:15 - 7:30       Character Counts Breakfast at Middle School (Jeff will say a few words)
8:00 - 9:00       7th/8th Grade Assembly - Character Building
9:40 - 10:40     High School Assembly - Power of One Theme
10:45 - 11:45   Workshop (about 60 students back at MS) mixed with MS 7th/8th gr. Peer Leaders and HS students
We are extremely excited about this program and hope you can attend.  Please RSVP me at bhenise@comcast.net.

December 6 Studio Session Live Performance by Michelle Lewis & Dan Chauvin @ 77 Main Street Studios. About Michelle Lewis:
If you meet Michelle before you hear her music, you might be surprised to find out she plays folk. She doesn't fit the profile. She quotes Homer Simpson before Paul Simon. She prefers Mardi Gras to Earth Day. She drives fast. She throws snowballs. She talks loud, she eats meat, and if you leave the mayonnaise off her sandwich she might try to fight you. If you hear Michelle's music before you meet her, you might be surprised at her exuberance. Her songs throw you against a wall. They kick you out of the house and walk around naked. They call up to heaven. They crumble at your feet. At first, it doesn't add up. But then you get to know her better and you begin to notice that she always tells the truth. You notice that she's been listening the whole time. You realize how much she values sincerity and that, even when she's clowning around, she's just being herself. Then you listen to her lyrics and you hear the triumph. You understand that she finds as much exhilaration in performing her music as she does the rest of her life. More, even. You realize that when she performs she is living the life to which her songs aspire. Michelle's music is caring, vivacious and completely authentic. Watch her perform and you will understand. Her fingers articulate every note; her voice picks out every word. But you don't hear notes and you don't hear words. When Michelle plays, all you hear is music, and it all makes sense. About Dan Chauvin: Born and raised in his home town of Linwood, Massachusetts, Dan Chauvin performed his first professional musical engagement at age 14 at a club he wasn't even old enough to enter, but did anyway. He blends traditional New England folk sounds of his roots with progressive rock influences that create an original ear-catching style reminiscent of the Harry Chapin-James Taylor story-telling era accented by an acoustic finger-picking, almost bluegrass style that is creatively his own. Dan's lyrics take on the darker side of personal relationships and the everyday grind of life in general as well as the all-to-real emotions created when not everything goes as planned. His music is easy to listen to, light, and extremely relatable to the common individual. A natural, soulful flow to his music keeps your attention with a stage presence that is genuine, sincere, and unabrasive with enticing melodies, sweet rhymes and a refined musical ability. Dan puts the "easy" in Easy Listening.
