the kennel grounds at 167 Saddle Hill Road, Hopkinton September 30 & October
1, owners of greyhounds young and old are encouraged to come down to this
event with their beloved canines to have them spoiled on location. From
12pm-5pm, activities have been planned for both days including pet pampering
events such as Dog Massage, Pet Photography and the Not Quite Westminster
Dog Show. Four tracks will soon be closing for the season, making this a
busy time for Greyhound Friends in finding placements for retired dogs.
This is the perfect chance for potential dog owners thinking about greyhound
adoption to come visit dogs in of need loving homes. The Open House will
have food available, raffles, a silent auction, and of course, merchandise
for the four-legged companion.

October 1 Creatures of all species – including four-legged friends or feathered fowl -- are invited to receive a special blessing at St. Paul’s 15th Annual Blessing of the Animals on October 1. All dogs, cats, and others of God’s creatures – and their human friends – are invited to a special 10:00 a.m. ceremony being held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 61 Wood Street (Rte 135) in Hopkinton. The Blessing of the Animals is being done in observance of the feast day of St. Francis, a man known for his love of nature and all of God’s creatures, and will take place during the 10:00 a.m. service of Holy Eucharist. Registration and rolling start are set for 8:00 -10:00 a.m. Boston’s Making Strides is the nation’s oldest and largest one-day walk, raising more than $30 million to fight breast cancer since its inception in 1993. October 17 Hopkinton’s Special Education Advisory Council (SPEAC) will be hosting a discussion regarding the Treasures reading program for grades K-3 on Tuesday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hopkinton Middle School Lecture Hall. This event is free and open to the public.The discussion will be led by Hopkinton's Director of Elementary Education, Sharon DeCarlo, and representatives from Macmillan McGraw-Hill. "Treasures was selected after three years of research, review, and piloting to support a balanced literacy program in the Hopkinton Schools," DeCarlo explained. "Treasures is built upon a foundation of research by the National Reading Panel supporting the requirements of NCLB (No Child Left Behind) phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and word work, and text comprehension. It provides the tools for explicit, systematic instruction and research proven routines." DeCarlo added that Treasures also provides a variety of validated assessment tools to help teachers identify strengths and weaknesses and to meet the needs of all students. These assessments include screening and diagnostic tools, placement and progress monitoring. Based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, SPEAC is made up of parents and guardians working to ensure all children with special needs are educated effectively. SPEAC believes in the worth and importance of each child’s education and strives to continually enhance the quality of Hopkinton’s special education programs. In addition to hosting workshops and education roundtables, SPEAC also annually awards scholarships to graduating students who have benefited from special education or related services and are pursuing higher education. In the spring, FCCH leaders asked town officials, “What needs in our community do you see that could be met if we offered a helping hand – or over 600 pairs of helping hands?” The Hopkinton Police and Fire Departments responded enthusiastically asking if those hands came with feet! FCCH will assist them by visiting most of the houses in town to pass along important, life-saving safety information regarding smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and visibility of house numbers for faster emergency response times. Look for us on the weekends of October 14-15 or October 21-22. “The importance of the ‘Checking in with Hopkinton’ initiative can’t be overstated. Come and see the Middlesex Sheriffs Departments K9 unit demonstration, the Hopkinton Police motorcycle demonstration and tour hands-on displays of Police, Fire and Sheriffs Department equipment and emergency vehicles. Collect materials and ask questions about important issues like home disaster preparedness, automobile safety, car seat installation, 9-1-1 usage, lock safety, Halloween safety and more. October 28 Renowned folk singer Barbara Kessler will be giving a rare performance at the Enter Stage Left (ESL) workshop studio (30 Main Street, Hopkinton) at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 28. Hopkinton-based Kessler, whose works include Stranger To This Land, notion, and Barbara Kessler, has been critically acclaimed by music critics and has won awards such as Best Debut Folk/Acoustic Album by the Boston Music Award, and First Prize in the USA Songwriting Competition/Folk Category. Her music has also been featured on television shows and on the Play Station game Rogue Galaxy. Kessler’s performance is the first of ESL’s Coffeehouse Series, which will feature local folk, jazz, spoken word, and cabaret performers. October 28 The Hopkinton Parent/Teacher Association (HPTA) and the Holliston High School Parents Group (HHSPG) announce the premiere of The Perfect Dress. The two groups will be selling current, stylish, gently used dresses and accessories appropriate for all Middle and High School dances and proms, as well as weddings, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, recitals, or any other formal or semi-formal occasion at the Hopkinton High School on January 27, 2007, 10am – 2pm. The snow date is February 3, 2007 in the same location. Dresses will be sold at a reasonable price - $20 - $30, as well as accessories like shoes, bags, and jewelry. There will be multiple raffle drawings for prizes like make-up, jewelry, limo service, photography packages, manicures, flowers, etc. Vendors will also be available and offering make-up, jewelry, and accessories. The HPTA and HHSPG are both supported by students from their respective schools. The Hopkinton High School students, led by senior Meg Anderson, are dedicating their efforts, as well as their portion of the proceeds, to the memory of their classmate, Andrea Goncalves. Andrea died tragically in a car accident last spring, just before her junior prom. She was a loving friend and very active in community service, so this project seemed like the perfect way to honor her memory. The Holliston High School students, led by seniors Janna Goldberg and Vicki Mason, are excited to participate in this new venture as well. Janna began working on this project as a joint endeavor with her mom. She was excited by a project which would make the season of special events affordable for all, and asked her friend Vicki to join her. Donations of dresses are currently being accepted. Since the first “Scouting for Food Drive” a few years ago, the number of families who rely on the food pantry in Hopkinton has dramatically risen fro 4 to 60 families with even more families requiring assistance during the winter months, Your assistance is needed now more than ever! The year the scouts would appreciate your assistance, and in addition to the traditional non-perishable items such as canned food, also appreciated would be non-food items such as household cleaning supplies, laundry detergent and general toiletries such as toothpaste and shampoo. On Saturday October 29th, Scouts will distribute collection bags at area residences that detail the types of donations desired. Residents are asked to fill the bags and put them out for collection the following Saturday, November 4th, for collection by the Scouts.
