February 1 HCEP hosts Introduction To Ceramics Hopkinton High School Ceramics Room C202. Ann Rainey, Hopkinton HS Art Teacher will teach you the basic techniques including of pottery making including wheel throwing. Students will explore surface decoration, under glazes, slips and much more to make vases, mugs and bowls. All experience levels are welcome. Experienced potters can further their knowledge. All work will be low or mid fired in an electric kiln. Cost: $125.00 includes cost of materials.

February 1 MetroWest YMCA Summer Day Camp registration begins. February 1 Women's Art Forum presents Cheryl Melody 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm @ CAA Center. Cheryl Melody will talk about the places that music has taken her including work as a nationally recognized children’s peace activist,  a performer of folk and spiritual music for adults and more recently  performing sound healing with voice and Tibetan bowls. Cheryl will share her stories as well as some of her songs  during this presentation. She will also talk about the process of songwriting and finding ways to share the songs that are waiting within all of us. A 3-5 dollar donation is requested to help with administrative expenses.  The CAA extends this invitation to all women of Hopkinton and surrounding communities.

February 1,2 The Fashion/Textile classes at HHS are knitting scarves and hats for the American Caner Society to give to women who are newly diagnosed with breast cancer.  Included in this gift will be helpful information about programs and support that "ACS" provides for cancer patients. We are looking for donations of fun, fashionable yarn &Provo Craft Knifty Knitting looms! February 2 Colella's Supermarket, Inc. is partnering with Hopkinton High School students, the Hopkinton Prevention Coalition, and the “beFree!” Project in Hopkinton’s version of the “Sticker Shock Campaign,” an effort to raise awareness about alcohol abuse by youth in our community.  At approximately 2:30 on Friday, February 2nd, a team of Hopkinton High School students will visit Colella’s Supermarket; and, with adult supervision, place stickers that remind purchasers of legal drinking age that is illegal to provide alcohol to minors on all multi-packs of beer, wine coolers, and other alcohol products that might appeal to underage drinkers. According to Renee Cammarata, project director of the “beFree!” Project, a recent survey indicates that underage drinking is the greatest substance abuse problem facing Hopkinton’s youth. HHS sophomore Pat Maruska chairs Hopkinton’s “Sticker Shock Campaign”. The first “Sticker Shock Campaign” was designed by a group of youth in Pennsylvania in 1998, which started locally in their community and then expanded the project statewide in subsequent years.  It has been implemented in numerous other states and communities in Massachusetts.

February 3 Hopkinton Education Foundation presents Winter Gala at The Sheraton Framingham Hotel.  Cocktails are from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Music by Search Party, a Live Auction, Texas Hold'em, Black Jack, and Raffle Prizes.  Additional tickets on sale Saturday, January 6, 2007 from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm at Colella's Supermarket.  Tickets are $80 per person. February 6 HPTA presents The Movie "Cars" 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm @ Hopkinton High School Auditorium. Refreshments will be sold: Chips, Candy, Water and Juice boxes. Cost: $5 per child, Adults are free ($20 Family Max) Children must be accompanied by an Adult. One lucky movie guests will will go home with the movie. February 6 On February 6th at 7:00 pm Bill Woytek, deer biologist for Mass Wildlife (dept of fisheries and wildlife), will do a presentation on the growing moose population in the state. Surrounding town officials have been invited to attend. This is open to the public and there is no charge to attend. Bill is very knowledgeable on this subject and will entertain questions after the presentation.

February 9 Enter Stage Left Theater Workshop, Inc. will be debuting it’s monthly Youth Showcase series with a performance by 15-year-old musician Sinai Tabak.    The performance will take place at 8:00 p.m. at ESL studios at 30 Main Street, Hopkinton.  Tickets are $10.00. “We are delighted to have Sinai as our ‘opening act’ for the Youth Showcase, which was designed to give the talented youth of Metrowest a welcoming and intimate setting where they can perform,” said Kelly Grill, a co-founder of ESL.  “Solo performers or small groups are welcome to audition their art, whether it be singing, performing music, acting, or comedy.  Those selected will perform at a future Youth Showcase.”   For more information about the Youth Showcase or auditions, visit www.enterstagelefttheater.com. About Sinai Tabak - Sinai Tabak, a sophomore at Milford High School, has been playing the piano for eight years, and has since become a piano teacher, solo performer, experienced accompanist, and songwriter. Renowned local jazz vocalists Jean Mancini Gough, Kaoruko and Kris Adams will perform their stylized interpretations of the jazz repertoire from Tin Pan Alley to bebop to bossa nova and beyond. February 10 MetroWest YMCA Open House 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. February 11 Helping Our Children Achieve (H.O.C.A.) is a monthly informational support group for families of special needs children.  The next meeting will be at 10 a.m. at the Millbury Public Library -- 128 Elm Street in Millbury (across from Asa Waters Mansion). Our speaker this month will be Jennifer Lentz, MT-BC, music therapist to discuss the benefits of music therapy for children with special needs.  Jennifer is passionate about helping others, performing and teaching music/musical theater and special education. She was inspired to work with people who have special needs and to enter the field of music therapy by her younger sister who has Down syndrome.   An employee of Apple Tree Arts, she delivers home-based services, helps clients at the Mercy Center in Worcester, and leads sessions at the Municipal Building and in her home in Grafton, MA. In addition, she conducts individual and group sessions at Southborough and Douglas school districts. The goal of HOCA  is to provide families of special needs children informational resources on therapy options, counseling, education concerns, dietary and biomedical approaches.  This is not a school district sponsored group.    Participants are able to discuss common concerns, specific needs and gather information on various treatments, therapies and other related issues.  There is no charge for any meeting. If you have relevant information to share with the HOCA group or are a medical professional, therapist or work in a profession dealing with special needs families contact Mary Romaniec at 508/839-9599 or Mromaniec@aol.com

February 12 –  It’s not easy for parents of special needs children to find their way in the sometimes confusing world of special education.  Who is eligible for special education?  What are their rights? How can they make sure these rights are being addressed? To answer these questions and more, Hopkinton’s Special Education Advisory Council (SPEAC) will be hosting a Basic Rights workshop at 7:00 p.m. at the Hopkinton Middle School Lecture Hall.  Presented by the Federation for Children, this workshop will give families an introduction to their rights and responsibilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Massachusetts Special Education Law, and No Child Left Behind.  It is designed to teach parents how to be effective partners with the school, decide the child’s eligibility for special education, and plan, make decisions and monitor the educations process of their children.The Basic Rights workshop is free and open to the public.  The snow date for the event is February 13. Based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, SPEAC is made up of parents and guardians working to ensure all children with special needs are educated effectively.  SPEAC believes in the worth and importance of each child’s education and strives to continually enhance the quality of Hopkinton’s special education programs.  In addition to hosting workshops and education roundtables, SPEAC also annually awards scholarships to graduating students who have benefited from special education or related services and are pursuing higher education.  For more information or to become a member, contact Karen Weiskerger at 508-497-3959, Amy Lincoln at 508 497-0172, or visit the SPEAC Web page listed under Support Organizations on the Hopkinton School District web site www.hopkinton.k12.ma.us/.

February 13,15 Enter Stage Left Theater Workshop Inc. will be hosting auditions for A Musical Tribute to the USO Shows of WWII  at 8:00 p.m. at ESL’s studios at 30 Main Street in Hopkinton.   Auditions are open to adults and teenagers 14 years of age and older, and participants are encouraged to prepare a 1940s style song to sing.  Performances will be May 18 and 19th, and rehearsals will be held twice a week in the evenings. A Musical Tribute to the USO Shows of WWII is being produced in collaboration with the Cultural Arts Alliance and proceeds will go towards the renovation of the CAA barn. February 24 The MacMillans perform w/special guest Nik Chisolm 6:00 pm & 8:00 pm @ ESL Studios. In January, 2006, brothers Fenwick & Dan Macmillan accidentally found themselves on stage with Fenwick’s wife Ursula in a Boston-area coffeehouse. Together, they played songs from their occasional holiday jam sessions and took turns chiming in on each others familiar original tunes. The result of this serendipitous union is three individuals, with a unique bond, who create harmonies only a family can and sing songs about love, loss, longing and hope.Dan Macmillan plays guitar and is the former front man of Apartment Three and 2FS. Ursula Macmillan is an accomplished session and choral singer and was the lead singer of the Boston band the Derailers. February 28 HPTA Parent Programs Presents "Promoting Positive Body Image in Children" 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm @ Hopkins School Library. This is a special program designed to discuss and offer techniques and strategies to help foster the development of a positive body image in children and adolescents.  Participants will learn to identify the societal influences of images and words that affect a child’s development of a negative body image.  This presentation will offer discussion about how families can combat the effect of the barrage of negative body images in the media. This is free program open to parents of boys and girls ages 8 and older.  Our presenter is Kristin Fabbri, Director of Education and Outreach from MEDA (Massachusetts Eating Disorders Association).  Please contact jdriscoll734@comcast.net for more information.
