Helping Our Children
Achieve (H.O.C.A.) is a monthly informational support group for families of
special needs children. The next meeting will be held Wednesday, January
3rd at 10 a.m. at the Millbury Public Library -- 128 Elm Street in Millbury
(across from Asa Waters Mansion).
Our speaker this month
will be Cindy Aiken, Assistant Vice-President of Assistive Technology for
Easter Seals Massachusetts. Cindy will be demonstrating the various
technical devices that are available via Easter Seals and discuss financial
options to obtain them. Many of these devices are essential to achieving
success in school and/or independent living. She has over ten years
experience in the field of assistive technology.
The goal of HOCA is to
provide families of special needs children informational resources on
therapy options, counseling, education concerns, dietary and biomedical
approaches. This is not a school district sponsored group. Participants
are able to discuss common concerns, specific needs and gather information
on various treatments, therapies and other related issues. There is no
charge for any meeting.

Ann Rainey, Hopkinton HS Art Teacher will teach you the basic techniques including of pottery making including wheel throwing. Students will explore surface decoration, under glazes, slips and much more to make vases, mugs and bowls. All experience levels are welcome. Experienced potters can further their knowledge. Painter, sculptor, musician -- no matter what your talent -- writing adds an additional source of self-expression to your artistic life. But where do you start? The personal essay can be your first step into writing fiction, nonfiction, or memoir. Bring pen and paper, and Glenda Baker and Judy adourian will guide you through the elements, style and possible markets for your first essay. January 7 Enter Stage Left Theater Workshop Inc. and the Saint Vincent DePaul Society will be hosting a Cold Hands Warm Hearts benefit at the Hopkinton Senior Center, 28 Mayhew Street, on Sunday, January 7, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. This event will feature music, refreshments, raffles, and children’s activities. ESL’s teen troupe and cast of the upcoming show, Groovy, will also be featured. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors. January 13 Enter Stage Left Theater Workshop Inc. will be hosting an evening of spoken word with Cheryl Perreault and singer-songwriters Steve Sanford and Steve Rapson on Saturday, January 13 at 8:00 p.m. The performance, which will take place at ESL’s studios at 30 Main Street in Hopkinton, will address the theme Celebrating the Joy of the Everyday and Other Interesting Phenomenon and will include funny and touching observations on parenting, middle age, driving on the back roads of Metrowest, and the immortalization of the little black dress. Hopkinton resident Cheryl Perreault is a spoken word artist and poet who, together with guitarist Steve Rapson, has produced a CD titled On Ants, Sandwiches and the Meaning of it All. She is also host and co-producer of the HCAM cable television show Wake Up and Smell the Poetry. Perreault also co-facilitates the monthly Cultural Arts Alliance (Hopkinton) Women’s Art Forum and is a poetry columnist and freelance writer for local news sources. Steve Rapson of Boston is a singer-songwriter and master guitarist. In addition to his work with Perreault he has also produced six CDs of his original songs and guitar music, and also authored the book The Art of the Solo-Performer. Steve Sanford is a songwriter, guitarist, singer and percussionist who grew up in Brazil but now lives in Jamaica Plain. He has studied many styles of music and currently divides his musical life between performing Brazilian music, performing his own compositions, and composing music for musical groups such as The New World Guitar Trio and Hourglass.

Enter Stage Left Theater Workshop is holding auditions for Here We Sit, a
hilarious comedy about the theater audience. Performances are
scheduled for March 24 and 25. Rehearsals are scheduled for Mondays,
Wednesdays and Sundays throughout February and March. This show is broken
into sketches, so not all actors will be at all rehearsals until close to
show time.
Auditions will consist of readings from the script. January 16 Parents of special needs children have to learn how to advocate for their children in many ways, whether they are speaking to the pediatrician, school administrators, or other parents. As the children get older, they need to learn how to advocate for themselves in a way that helps others fully understand their needs. On Tuesday, January 16, Hopkinton’s Special Education Advisory Council (SPEAC) will be hosting an “A is for Advocate” panel discussion with educational advocates from all walks of life. This session, which will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the Hopkinton Middle School Lecture Hall, will give parents the answers they need to advocate successfully for their children, and also provide guidance on how parents can help their children advocate for themselves. The meeting is free and open to the public. Based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, SPEAC is made up of parents and guardians working to ensure all children with special needs are educated effectively. SPEAC believes in the worth and importance of each child’s education and strives to continually enhance the quality of Hopkinton’s special education programs. In addition to hosting workshops and education roundtables, SPEAC also annually awards scholarships to graduating students who have benefited from special education or related services and are pursuing higher education. Alter Ego is a group of seven Boston-area musicians, singers and songwriters with day jobs who initially came together in order to get out of the house and make music again. It soon became apparent that there was something special and musically intriguing that was happening whenever we played. Vocal harmonies and arrangements fell into place quickly and it turned out to be a really easygoing and fun group of people to hang out and play with. Their current repertoire is a mix of melodic originals and covers of songs by other artists. Stylistically, their music ranges from alt-country to folk to low-volume rock/pop. Meg Tyler is assistant professor of humanities at Boston University and has been a Teaching Fellow at Harvard University and an instructor at Universite Paris V and VII. She is co-editor of two anthologies of prison writing, In Time and From this Distance. Her book, A Singing Contest: Conventions of Sound in the Poetry of Seamus Heaney was published by Routledge in July 2005. Her poetry and prose have appeared in Agni, The Kenyon Review, Harvard Review and Del Sol Review among other journals. Meg also directs the Boston University Poetry Reading Series. Polly Brown, is an elementary head school teacher at Touchstone Community School in Grafton MA. She is also a member of the Every Other Thursday poetry collaborative and has published her poetry in Dark Horse, the Beloit Poetry Review, Soundings East, Sojourner, and the Christian Science Monitor, among other places. Polly won the Worcester County Poetry Prize in 1986 and was a Massachusetts Artists Foundation Finalist in the same year. A collection of her poetry, Blue Heron Stone was published in 2000. Tierney Nolen is a senior at Hopkinton High School and has been a part of the drama program for her entire high school career. Recently she was in the fall musical "The Pajama Game" as Gladys and was apart of the ensemble performance "Spoon River Anthologies" as well as Robin Gibson in the fall 2005 musical "Smile". January 23 MOMS Club of Hopkinton presents A Workshop on Improving Sibling Relationships. Wondering how to prepare your child for a new baby? Uncertain about intervening in sibling squabbles? Discuss the importance of sibling relationships and what factors most affect them, including parental expectations and common sources of jealousy. Explore ways in which parents can foster positive relationships among young brothers and sisters. This workshop will also include a discussion of appropriate language to use with young children. The workshop will be presented by Deborah Weinstock-Savoy, Ph.D (Clinical Psychology). Deborah has over 20 years of professional experience working with families with young children and is the mother of three children. For planning purposes, we greatly appreciate advance registration. The cost for advance registration is $15; the cost at the door will be $20. January 26 & 27 When hippies in the 1960s decide to put on a “free music festival” at Crumb Apples Farm, you know some hilarious and crazy events will ensue. That’s the premise behind Groovy, a musical spoof being presented by Enter Stage Left and featuring 38 preteen actors. January 27 The Hopkinton Parent/Teacher Association (HPTA) and the Holliston High School Parents Group (HHSPG) announce the premiere of The Perfect Dress. The two groups will be selling current, stylish, gently used dresses and accessories appropriate for all Middle and High School dances and proms, as well as weddings, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, recitals, or any other formal or semi-formal occasion at the Hopkinton High School Cafeteria on January 27, 2007, 10am – 2pm. The snow date is February 3, 2007 in the same location. Dresses will be sold at a reasonable price - $20 - $30, as well as accessories like shoes, bags, and jewelry. There will be multiple raffle drawings for prizes like make-up, jewelry, limo service, photography packages, manicures, flowers, etc. Vendors will also be available and offering make-up, jewelry, and accessories. According to Hopkinton High School Senior, Megan Anderson, 2/3 of the money collected will go toward the Andrea and Joshua Goncalves Memorial Scholarship Fund. This family of faith will be dedicating to the glory of God a newly completed addition which doubles their present facility; allowing greater opportunity for Christian formation and fellowship. The Reverend Howard K. Burgoyne, Superintendent of the sixty-four churches which comprise the East Coast Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church, will be bringing the morning message.
