June 6 Helping Our Children Achieve (H.O.C.A.) is a monthly informational support group for families of special needs children.  The next meeting will be held Wednesday, June 6th at 10 a.m. at the Millbury Public Library -- 128 Elm Street in Millbury (across from Asa Waters mansion).  Our speakers this month are Gina Gallagher and Patty Konjoian, authors of the book Shut Up About Your Perfect Kid. Patty and Gina are among the growing number of American parents raising children with disabilities (Patty’s 13 year old daughter has bipolar disorder; Gina’s 11 year old daughter has Asperger’s syndrome).  To get them through their daily struggles, they rely on two things: humor and support from others. The book’s premise and the accompanying movement of “Imperfection,” will change the way people think about children with disabilities.  It will also encourage parents of disabled and otherwise “imperfect” children to share their stories through an open dialogue of online discussions at www.shutupaboutyourperfectkid.com. Shut Up About…Your Perfect Kid! is for any parent whose child does not fit today’s high standards. Narrated by Gina and Patty; it features a collection of entertaining and heartwarming stories, theirs and others from parents whose children have a wide range of disabilities.  It will have virtually any parent laughing out loud and viewing the positive side of raising an “imperfect” child. The goal of HOCA  is to provide families of special needs children informational resources on therapy options, counseling, education concerns, dietary and biomedical approaches.  This is not a school district sponsored group.    Participants are able to discuss common concerns, specific needs and gather information on various treatments, therapies and other related issues.  There is no charge for any meeting. For further information contact Mary Romaniec at Mromaniec@aol.com

Donations of baby, children’s and adult clothes, furniture, small appliances and household items are needed.  We are not able to take couches, beds, computers, televisions or anything with Freon.  If in doubt about a donation, please contact the Senior Center at 497-9730. Donations may be dropped off at the Senior Center Monday thru Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.  We ask that donations be made prior to June 18.  This will allow us the needed time to properly set up for the sale. The Sale takes place Thursday & Friday June 21 & 22  from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Sat. June 23 (bag day) 9-12.  Items in the Thrift Shop will not be included in “bag day” or discounted.
