April 1,8,15 A three part series featuring a new and powerful documentary film “The Power of Forgiveness” will be presented at Grace United Methodist Church, 61 Wood Street, Hopkinton, on April 1, April 8 and April 15 from 7:30-8:30 PM. The Power of Forgiveness includes features with the Amish, Ground Zero, Beirut, and Belfast as well as interviews with renowned Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh, Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel, best selling authors Thomas Moore and Marianne Williamson and others. Everyone is welcome to attend this free program.

 

April 1 The Friends of the Hopkinton Senior Citizens invite you to our next community meeting.  Please join us at an information night beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Hopkinton Senior Center, 24 Mayhew.  We will also be looking for volunteers to sign up to help with the booth at the common during Marathon Weekend. April 3 April is National Poetry Month and the Hopkinton Women's Art Forum is honored to announce Hopkinton resident and poet, Polly Brown as our special guest feature of the month. Polly will be sharing her words of poetry and some of the stories about her life and how it has intersected and inspired her writing at the Cultural Arts Center. The Cultural  Arts Center is located at 98 Hayden Rowe in Hopkinton, MA. This event is free and open to all women of the Hopkinton community and beyond. April 5 Barbara Kessler will be hosting another Open Mic Night at ESL. April 7 The ground breaking documentary “There is a Bridge” will be presented at the Senior Center on at 1:00. Beacon Hospice would like to share the wonderful gifts  this film and closing discussion can provide to those who are touched by someone with Alzheimer’s. “There is a Bridge” includes interviews with preeminent thinkers and poignant footage of family members, caregivers and schoolchildren building emotionally rich relationships with people   with dementia, revealing the depths of memory and personal identity not erased by Alzheimer’s. You too can find a bridge! This groundbreaking documentary may change the way you imagine Alzheimer’s disease- and quite possibly, how you see yourself. Everyone is welcome to attend this free program.

 

April 11,12 The Kids Choir of the First Congregational Church is presenting a musical, "Holy Moses" at 7pm. Suggested donation is $2 for adults and $1 for children 12 and under. Please also consider donating a canned good item for local food pantries. There are 40 talented children, a live band, and awesome choreography. A fun night for everyone!

 

 

 

 

April 18,19 Enter Stage Left Theater will be presenting Arthur Miller’s rendering heart-wrenching classic, Death of a Salesman  at 8:00 p.m. The show features ESL actors from Hopkinton, Milford, Millis, and Worcester, and is directed by ESL co-founder Paul Champlin, with set design by Nancy Stevenson.  All shows will be held at ESL’s studio at 30 Main Street in Hopkinton and tickets are $12 per person. April 13 The Hopkinton and Boston Athletic Associations proudly present Dr Peter L Cokkinias leading the MSO in the 2nd Annual Boston Marathon Kickoff Concert. The performance will kick off Hopkinton’s Marathon Week, a week of events leading up to the 112th running of the Boston Marathon, the worlds oldest and finest! The performance will take place in Hopkinton Middle School's  Auditorium on Sunday, April 13th, 3:00PM, 90 Hayden Rowe Street, Hopkinton, MA. The unveiling of the newly forged Alfano Sculpture of George V Brown, Hopkinton’s First Citizen of Sport, will highlight the afternoon. George V. Brown’s involvement in Boston Marathon, US Olympic, and Ice Hockey is legendary in sport’s history. The MSO will perform an array of orchestral masterpieces including Mars from the The Planets, Stravinsky’s Firebird, and Suppe’s Light Cavalry Overture. A guest celebrity “conductor” will make an appearance to lead the symphony in a rousing march. Our special Guest Artist, Veteran Marathoner and Concert Pianist, Ronald Kmiec, will perform the majestic Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1. This performance will honor Kmiec’s 35th consecutive running of the Boston Marathon. In collaboration with the Art Institute of New England, the MSO will play the World Premier of Chris Florio’s “Nenikékamen,” a piece depicting Greek soldier Pheidippides’ legendary run from the plains of Marathon to Athens with the news of the astounding victory over the superior Persian army. Florio will also create a spectacular interactive multimedia presentation to compliment the evening’s performance. April 15 The Hopkinton Garden club hosts "The Invasive Plant Crisis in Hopkinton with author Peter Alden 7:30 pm @ First Congregational Church, 146 East Main Street, Hopkinton. The Hopkinton Garden Club invites the community to join them for an important educational presentation on awareness of outdoor invasive plants that are taking over our native plants in New England. Alden, who is author of 15 nature and travel books including National Audubon Society Field Guide to New England, will give a presentation of what to look for and how to help prevent invasives from attacking the native plants in our own backyard and gardens. Refreshments will be served at 6:00 pm, a one hour meeting of the Garden Club will follow from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm and the presentation will begin at 7:30. Admission is $5. April 16 St. John the Evangelist Church in Hopkinton will have a TESTAMENT men's group meeting at 7:30 p.m. Steve Burton, WBZ-TV sportscaster and Hopkinton resident, will deliver a presentation titled "Making A Difference." Mr. Burton will elaborate on how a father can influence the lifetime of his children. Parents are invited to attend the presentation.

 

 

 

 

April 16 The Hopkinton Youth Commission is offering all parents of teens and interested community members to come out and join the second Parent's Night Out program which will take place from 7:00-9:00 pm at the lower level of Hopkinton Town Hall located on 18 Main Street. This program will consist of showing the new PBS documentary film "Growing up Online" on big screen and then following the film with dessert and a lively discussion with Boston Globe columnist, Barbara Meltz.  Meltz, who is also  author of " Put Yourself in their shoes, Understanding how children see the world, has been invited as special guest to help facilitate a follow-up discussion with attending parents on how to cope with parenting and use of the internet. This is a free program open to the public and offers an important  opportunity to address this issue as a community of parents and other concerned residents  to help strengthen connections between parents, teens and community. April 18 Hopkinton Girl Scouts hosts a Tea Reception for the Marathon Greece delegates 4:00 pm @ Weston Nurseries. The Tea will serve as the 'event' my scouts will participate in with representatives from our sister city - a criterion for earning the Global Awareness Junior Girl Scout badge. My troop is working on this particular badge which is what prompted me to ask Tim Kilduff back in January if he could help us learn about our sister-city.

 

April 19 Wake Up and Smell the Poetry with host Cheryl Perreault 10:30 am - 12:30 pm @ HCAM Studios. Featuring Meg Kearney, Kathleen Aguero and Kate Chadbourne. April 20 Hopkinton Historical Society holds the annual joint meeting with the Ashland Historical Society at 2:00 pm. The specific program for the meeting has not been confirmed as of this newsletter, but the meeting is planned to be held at the Ocean House in Ashland (2 Myrtle Street) at the corner of Water Street and Main Street. Please join us for a program and reception with our neighbors to the east.

April 26 The next, and last for the year, boating safety class will be held  from 10:00AM to 5:00PM at EMC. Please bring a packed lunch, snacks and drinks as this will be a full day class.The boating safety certificate is valid in all 50 US states.

 

April 26 Folk singer/songwriter Chris Connors, whose music offers reflections on complexities and joys of relationships, spirituality, loss, and rebirth with unusual depth and wisdom, will perform at the Enter Stage Left Coffeehouse at 8:00 pm. With folk and spiritual roots, her songs have found enthusiastic audiences in both the folk and women's music communities. Tickets are $10.00 per person. April 27 Bicycles, motorcycles, and tricycles are just some of the modes of transportation that will receive a special blessing at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 61 Wood Street (Rte 135) in Hopkinton at 10:30 a.m. All are invited to come and have their bikes blessed. Those interested are also welcome to stay for the Holy Eucharist celebration following the blessing.

 

April 29 Calling All Business Professionals. April 30 Deadline for the Hopkinton 2009 Community Register & Telephone Directory. Boston Marathon Photography Contest. The Hopkinton Women’s Club is sponsoring a town wide contest.  We are looking for a creative photo for the cover of the Hopkinton 2009 Community Register and Telephone Directory.  If you are an aspiring photographer or even an accomplished one, please enter our contest. Submissions must meet the following criteria: “Boston Marathon” Theme, Black and white or color photo 5x8  (may be larger with same proportions), Must be vertical in orientation.Traditional or digital photos are acceptable and they can be realistic or artfully enhanced.  If you are submitting a computer created photo, you will also need to submit a print for judging purposes.  The winning photo will not be returned There will be an award of $50 for photo that is chosen for the 2009 Phone Directory as well as credit given in the directory.  The Hopkinton Women’s Club members will select the winning photo at their May meeting. April 30 State of the Town 7:45 am @ First Congregational Church. This program should prove to be an informative lead up to Hopkinton’s Annual Town Meeting set to convene on  May 5, 2008 at 7 PM. If you are interested in the state of Hopkinton’s fiscal affairs you won’t want to miss this event. You will leave with a clearer understanding of the town’s current fiscal situation as well as upcoming challenges and opportunities that will have an impact on our future. You will also hear details pertaining to the proposed zoning changes, which will enable Boulder Capital to move forward with their Legacy Farms plan. The Zoning Advisory Committee and the Planning Board recommended changes will be voted on during the Annual Town Meeting.
