It’s not easy for parents of special needs children to
navigate their way in the sometimes confusing world of special education.
Who is eligible for special education? What are their rights? How can they
make sure these rights are being addressed? To answer these questions and
more, the Hopkinton, Holliston and Ashland PACs (Parent Advisory Council),
will be hosting a Basic Rights workshop on Tuesday, February 5, at 7:00 p.m.
at the Ashland Middle School Little Theater. Presented by the Federation
for Children, this workshop will give families an introduction to their
rights and responsibilities under the Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act (IDEA), Massachusetts Special Education Law, and No Child Left
Behind. It is designed to teach parents how to be effective partners with
the school, decide the child’s eligibility for special education, and plan,
make decisions and monitor the educations process of their children. The
Basic Rights workshop is free and open to the public. The snow date for the
event is February 12. Based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, SPEAC is made up of
parents and guardians working to ensure all children with special needs are

508-497-3959. February 6 St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will mark the beginning of the Lenten Season with two special Ash Wednesday services on February 6. At 12:00 noon there will be Imposition of Ashes and at 7:30 p.m. there will be Imposition of Ashes and Holy Eucharist. Every Wednesday thereafter during Lent there will be Holy Eucharist services at 7:30 p.m., preceded by a small gathering in the clergy office to Pray the Psalms at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend these services during this period of self-examination and self-discovery. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is located at 61 Wood Street (Rte. 135) in Hopkinton. February 8 Hopkinton Basketball is hosting the annual Fan Appreciation Night. Come watch both Hopkinton Varsity Basketball Teams play Medfield in the Athletic Center. It all begins at 6pm with the Boys Varsity followed by the 7:30 Lady Hillers Varsity game. All H opkinton residents will get in for free and is sure to be a night of great basketball and some special surprises for the fans! February 9 HEF 15th Anniversary Crystal Ball @ Crowne Plaza in Natick. The festivities will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will feature cocktails, fun-themed dinner stations, a band, a live auction, numerous raffle prizes, and a gaming room. February 9 Kaoruko, a jazz vocalist from Tokyo who has studied vocal performance, jazz composition, style and scat skills at Berklee College of Music and with Hal Crook and Charlie Sorrento, will be returning to the Enter Stage Left Coffeehouse at 8:00 p.m. Kaoruko has also performed jazz standards in clubs such as Ryles, Les Zygomates, and Bullfinch’s. ESL Coffeehouse Series takes place at Enter Stage Left Theater Workshop’s intimate studio setting at 30 Main Street in Hopkinton. Tickets are $10.00 per person. February 9 The Knights off Columbus meat raffles are held at the K of C hall. located at 77 Prescott Rd in Whitinsville, Ma. Easy to get take Exit 5 (Main St)off 146 head towards northbridge Prescott Rd is your 1st right after Wal-Mart. The raffle will begin at 2 PM sharp. The doors opens at 1 PM. Please bring non perishable items to be donated, receive a raffle ticket for each item. Bring a friend to the meat raffle and receive a special raffle ticket. February 9 Woodville Rod & Gun Club will hold it's annual Game Feed. This dinner, which has been attended by hundreds of area residents over the years, is held the first Saturday after the Super Bowl weekend. The packed house will be offered a very varied menu which includes; goose pate, smoked pheasant seasoned with cider and roasemary, and mixed game sausage for appitizers, pheasant Marsala, bear kabobs, duck in a rasberry sauce, venison enchilada cassarole, venison wrapped in bacon, venison sauerbraten, frog legs (unsure how they'll be prepared), and other delicious courses. A donation of $30 reserves a seat to this popular meal, and you'd be best advised to bring a big appitite as the portions are not small. February 10 Probably America’s most famous defense lawyer, Clarence Darrow was immortalized by his role in the trial of John Scopes, a teacher who challenged the Tennessee law making it a crime to teach the theory of evolution in public schools in 1925. Clarence was born in Kinsman, Ohio, the son of a village undertaker and coffin maker. At 10 years of age, he was described as having “a nonconforming spirit, a skeptical mind, and freelance politics that drifted toward cynicism”. Years later, he would be responsible for shaping many of the criminal defense strategies still used today. February 12 HPTA Presents Understand Hopkinton's Budget 10:30 am @ CAA Building. The difference between a “level service” budget and a “level funded” budget and what they mean to residents. How the budget affects the services residents receive from the town such as trash pickup, road maintenance and repair, fire and police response to calls to your home, the construction and development of commercial and residential land, the education of children. The gap between the revenues the town has to spend and the cost of delivering the same services offered now. What elected officials and town volunteers are doing to cut expenses, implement economies, and build revenue this budget cycle and the years to come. We are looking forward to hosting this process. Experts will be available to answer questions. February 12 The MetroWest YMCA Day Camp will be holding a camp information night on Tuesday February 12th at 7:00pm in Hayes Lodge. Prospective parents and campers are invited to attend to view a camp video presentation and have a have a question and answer sessions. Light refreshments will be available. February 13 The CAA is pleased to announce the formation of the Hopkinton Artists Guild. The new group will promote the interests of local visual artists by providing an educational, skill development, and social setting for its members through regular meetings at private homes, as well as at the CAA facilities. Its objective is to provide a high-quality art forum where members can share their interest in the visual arts in a comprehensive way so they can grow as individual contributors. A founding meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 8:00 PM at the home of William Moser (File photo) at 4 Wescott Drive in Hopkinton. To set the tone for future meetings, sculptor Michael Alfano will share his expertise in clay modeling. The group will exchange some ideas in a social setting and decide on future directions for the Artists Guild. February 18-22 Hopkinton YMCA hosts February Vacation Club. Vacation Club is available for children currently in grades K-6. Hours are 8:30am-6:00pm with the option of AM Care from 7:00am-8:30am. Activities include daily field trips such as bowling, indoor mini-golf and swimming as well as games, crafts, sports and sledding while at the YMCA. Week and daily rates are available for members and the general public. All participants must supply their own lunch and the YMCA will provide two daily snacks. This program will keep your children entertained while teaching them a variety of art techniques in drawing, painting and sculpture. Keep their creativity flowing over vacation! Projects will focus on a winter theme and be age appropriate. Students will be provided with a snack and a story half way through the program. Rollyn Sean Winters is currently a full time elementary art teacher in Waltham, and maintains a studio in Holliston. His specialty is drawing and he has exhibited his exquisite works at the CAA, in the past. February 27 The Rock School is a vacation week study at Robinson Music of eight young musicians from 8-13 years old, who will perform in an open recital on Friday, February 27. February 27 Studio Session Live proudly welcomes Sasha Yatchenko to perform in the HCAM Studios at 77 Main Street in Hopkinton. Audience seated 6:30 to 6:50, and the show will start at 7:00 . Reservations are required but tickets are free. Go to www.StudiosessionLive.com for tickets. Sasha Yatchenko is a young singer/songwriter from Hopkinton. Her one hour show will include jazz, folk, and original works, vocals with keyboard. She will perform with three guest artists on guitar, including Bob Nicoll. Her voice has been compared to Nora Jones, but Sasha is an original. She took piano lessons on and off, but found her passion in writing. Sasha found it too time-consuming to learn to play a song from the sheet music and preferred to play it by ear, and began writing her own music when she was supposed to be practicing her lessons. She entered the town talent show with an original composition Pitter Patter. Soon she was composing on a daily basis and looking for outlets where she could showcase her work. She has featured at area open mics. February 28,29 ESL hosts "The Sneeze" play 7:30 pm @ ESL Studio. Starring our talented teens!! Very funny Chekov play appropriate for middle school age and up.
