June 3,10,17 Rape Aggression Defense Systems Training for Women ONLY. R.A.D. is an Internationally taught realistic hands on self defense training class specifically designed for women (12-16 hours). The program teaches and emphasizes awareness, avoidance and physical self defense with the tools we possess with us at all times (hands, feet, elbows, knees, head, etc…). All ages, sizes and physical capabilities are welcome (14, 15 or 16; parental waiver will be needed – 13 and under is too young for this class). The class is free of charge sponsored by the Hopkinton Police Department. Manuals are provided as are water and light snacks. Casual exercise clothing and an aerobic type of sneaker preferred. The first 30 women to call this number or email will be enrolled (maximum number of students is 30). Confirmations will be done by email. Tuesday nights - May 27th @ Hopkinton Police Station and June 3rd, June 10th, June 17th @ Hopkinton Middle School - Doyle Gym. (all 4 nights required ) 6pm-9:30pm. June 3 The Hopkinton Education Foundation will host Hopkinton’s first ever Golf Ball Balloon Drop fundraising event. At the event, 1,000 golf balls will be dropped from the Re/Max hot air balloon over the fields at the Hopkins School.  The numbered golf balls correspond to tickets purchased in advance. After a hole is cut into the field, the balls will be dropped from the hot air balloon. The ball closest to or going in the hole wins $1,000.  A consolation prize of $100 for the ball furthest from the hole will also be awarded.  In the event of a tie, the prize(s) will be split. Golf ball tickets are now on sale! June 5 Women's Art Forum presents Tapestry of Voices 7:00 pm @ First Congregational Church. An evening of song with: Amanda Maffei, Barbara Kessler, Cheryl Melody, Ellen Schmidt, Bernadette Wiemer, Katie Frasinelli and Adrienne Fawkes. Each Musicician will share a few songs. June 6 Classic Rock pianist and singer Sinai Tabak will be featured at ESL’s Open Mic Night which will again be hosted by Barbara Kessler.  Singers and musicians can register to perform at 7:00 pm., and the performances will begin at 7:30 pm. June 7 American Cancer Society will be signing up volunteers for its Cancer Prevention Study-3 1:30 pm - 5:30 pm @ the Relay For Life of Ashland at the Ashland Middle School. Participants must be between the ages of 30 and 65, must never have been diagnosed with cancer, and must be willing to make a long-term commitment to the study. They will be asked to complete a brief written survey, provide a waist measurement, and give a small blood sample at the enrollment site. After that, follow-up surveys will be sent to the participants' homes on a regular basis over the next few decades to update health behavior information. Researchers will use the data from CPS-3 to build on evidence from a series of American Cancer Society studies that began in the 1950's and involved hundreds of thousands of volunteer participants. June 7 Come on down to an old-fashioned "Day at EMC Park" from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The radio station WROR (105.7 FM) street team and the Stonyfield Yoghurt truck will be there handing out free samples and playing music while Hopkinton Little League games are being played. So grab the kids, grab some lunch at the doghouse and just come on by! (Please note:  Parking may be limited so you may have to park at the High School and walk over.)

June 13,14  Due to popular demand, ESL will presenting encore performances of it USO Tribute Show on June 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hopkinton Senior Center.  This show of lively music and dancing recreates a USO Show and features the likes of Bob Hope, The Andrew Sisters, W.C. Fields and May West.   Participants will once again have the opportunity to travel back in time to enjoy classics songs such as I”ll Be Seeing You” and “Don’t Sit Under the Appletree” and then boogie down with the 15-piece swing band following the show. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and students.  A portion of the proceeds for the USO Tribute Show will go to the Hopkinton Senior Center Scholarship fund.  The Hopkinton Senior Center is located at  28 Mayhew Street in Hopkinton. ALL CUB SCOUT AGED BOYS (6-11) AND THEIR FAMILIES ARE WELCOME. Interested in seeing how much fun Cub Scouts can be? Please be our guest on Saturday, June 14, 2008 at Hopkinton State Park. Entry to the park(, food, and fun are on us. What is Geocaching? Glad you asked. Geocaching is a hike through the woods combined with a treasure hunt. Participants will be split into teams, each lead by at least one adult leader (parents can participate too!). Each group will have a “GPS” (global positioning system) and the coordinates of several “caches” or containers hidden in the park holding small “treasures” for everyone. The GPS can get you close to where the caches are, but you will need a keen eye to actually find them! What is a Picnic? Hopefully you already know! Hot dogs, hamburgers, fun and games! June 14 HHS Cross Country Car Wash 12:00 pm - 3:30 pm in the back parking lot of the Middle School. The car wash will be for funding to Guilderland, NY and Manchester, NH since we will have to pay for our own transportation this year. We have come in first and second at Guilderland and second at Manchester, so we would really love to go back to these places and win the gold at both. There will also be baked goods during the car wash.

 

June 15 The Community Covenant Church of Hopkinton invites you to a Strawberry Shortcake Social on Sunday afternoon, June 15th from 3:00 – 5:00 PM on the lawn of the church located at the corners of West Main and West Elm Streets. The event will feature homemade strawberry shortcake with whipped cream for $4 a serving. Members of the summer mission team will serve guests, and funds raised will go directly to the Boston Project Mission. In the event of rain, the social will be held indoors. June 16 Enter Stage Left Theater Inc. will be hosting auditions for its Summer Stock teen production of Grease on Monday, June 16 at 7:00 p.m. at ESL’s studios at 30 Main Street in Hopkinton.   Auditions are open to college students and teenagers 14 years of age and older, and participants should come with a prepared song to sing (preferably from the show). Grease, which is set in a high school in the late 1950's, is a musical that celebrates rock and roll as well as doo-woop music. The production is being directed by Kelly Grill and Denise Laumeister and performances will take place on August 15, 16 & 17. Rehearsals will be on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm, with additional rehearsals near performance time. June 17 Paperwork Night for Raider Football & Cheerleading 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm @ Ashland Middle School. You must have all of your child's paperwork in before they can participate in any practice. Practice will begin on Monday, August 4th, at Stone Park in Ashland. There are NO EXCEPTIONS. Paperwork needed is: A Signed Medical Release, A Report Card (complete copy, all pages, front and back)*if repot cards are not issued, they must be brought to the first practice, An ORIGINAL Birth Certificate (only if the child did not participate in the 2007 Season), A Copy of the child's Birth Certificate (whether they played before or not), The Parents/Players Code of Conduct, A Physical (has to be dated 2008) if the child does not have a scheduled physical the parent may get a letter from the child's physician. June 19 The Council on Aging Board, Friends of the Hopkinton Senior Citizens Board and the staff of the Senior Center invite all volunteers to join them at 5:30 pm for a Volunteer Appreciation @ the Hopkinton Senior Center. All volunteers are invited. We appreciate any amount of hours you have given to the Senior Center and our Seniors of Hopkinton. We could not run the Hopkinton Senior Center without you, with only a part time staff of 12. The success of our 1st year at the new Center has been more than we could have ever imagined. We have more than doubled the service to the seniors compared to the service

June 21 We are holding the fifth annual Sharon Timlin Memorial 5K Race, Walk and Family Fun Day at 9 AM at Hopkinton High School, Hopkinton , MA.  We are especially excited this year, as we will have the 2007 World Series Trophy at the event. We also have added a senior stroll, and a new angel sponsorship program (see website soon for details). As in past years, we will also have a professionally timed 5K road race (or walk), a kid's 1 mile run (7-10 year olds) and a great family fun day with prizes, food and entertainment. June 21 16th Annual Metro Boston Against the Tide event 7:30 am - 12:00 pm @ Hopkinton State Park. The Deputy Chief of Hopkinton Fire Department, Ken Clark and Hopkinton businessman Rob Phipps are displaying their pride and support in exciting ways for a local fundraiser this summer. Rob Phipps, President of The Phipps Insurance Agency of Hopkinton and Upton, Massachusetts, as well as Ashland Insurance Center of Ashland, MA, is proud to be a community sponsor for the Against the Tide event this summer.  Against The Tide is a fundraising event which raises money for Breast Cancer prevention research and education through the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC) and its sister research organization, Silent Spring Institute.

 

June 21 The Blackstone Valley Gardeners is pleased to be sponsoring the first garden tour in the town of Upton, rain or shine. The “Treasures of Upton” tour will feature a self-guided tour of eight beautiful gardens around town from 9:00 A.M. until 3:00 P.M. Refreshments will be provided at some of the gardens and many fabulous plants will be available for sale at one of the stops for very reasonable prices. The gardens are all very diverse and include a lovely organic herb garden, a formal boxwood parterre, gardens with waterfalls and ponds, shade and woodland gardens, and specimen gardens. The common denominator is that all these gardens are tended with care by people who love to garden and gardeners by nature love to share their gardens with others. Tickets for the tour are $15. Proceeds from the sale will help finance speakers for the club and civic projects throughout the year. June 21 Eventide: Images from the Edge, a collection of “Quantum Art” photography by Ashland resident Kenneth R. Ramsley, will be on exhibit at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 61 Wood Street (Rte. 135) in Hopkinton from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend this free event. “Quantum Art is the HDTV of photography, and relates to the nature of light and the numerical underpinnings of digital image-processing,” Ramsley explained.  “The basic story of the exhibit is how I’ve combined the science of advanced satellite camera technology with my own artistic vision to create exhibition-quality print photography." Ramsley’s photographs include stunning images of everyday objects such as ventilation towers, wooden piers, even ancient roof tar – as well as pictures depicting the play of sunlight on city buildings, train stations, and Pesky’s Pole. June 22 At 2:00 pm The Hopkinton Historical Society will be hosting a “celebrity panel” of local baby boomers who will be reflecting on the Town of Hopkinton as it was in the 1960s and 1970s.  Where was the best place to eat out or just hang out? June 28 Women's only Instructional Shooting Clinic 8:00 am - 5:00 pm @ Hopkinton Sportsmen's Association. Ladies, if you have ever thought about trying your hand at recreational shooting, here is your opportunity! Come join us for a women’s only instructional shooting clinic. You will receive hands on instruction in shotgun, rifle and pistol by the fun, friendly and knowledgeable folks at the Hopkinton Sportsmen’s Association. All women are invited to participate regardless of skill level. No previous experience is necessary; just the desire to learn and have fun. Food, fun and all materials are included! For those interested in applying for a Massachusetts firearm license, there will be a lecture on state and federal law beginning at 4:00pm and ending at approximately 5:00pm. June 29 At 4:00 p.m. the Friends of the Common will present a concert on the Hopkinton Town Common by children’s entertainer Ed Morgan a.k.a. “The Music Man.” Lots of singing, dancing and fun for babies, toddlers and young children. Please join us. Donations appreciated. Ed Morgan is the main attraction…for lots of children who, along with their parents, just love to sing along with Morgan to traditional children’s songs…” The Melrose Free Press.

 

June 30  CAA Summer Arts Program 8:30 am - 12:00 pm @ Hopkinton Middle School. The CAA Summer Arts Program is the original Summer Arts Program in Hopkinton. There is never a dull moment. Students create in art, move in music and perform in drama! An exciting journey into art, theater, movement and music for Hopkinton students Preschool through Grade 6.  Fee: $225 members / $260 nonmembers, discount on additional family members.  Includes supplies, materials, daily snack/drink and a T-shirt.
