November 1 Start your holiday shopping at the second annual Craft Fair taking place at the Hopkinton Senior Center on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 9:00 to 2:00. Over two dozen talented local  craftspeople will be selling their work.  Items include jewelry, knitted goods, woodenware, restored antique dolls, holiday items and much more. The Friends of the Seniors will be selling gift certificates good for all activities, meals or the thrift shop. The Thrift Shop will feature theme baskets, as well as their usual eclectic selection, and the Senior Center staff will prepare their popular hot turkey sandwiches for lunch. Reservations may be necessary for the 11:30 sitting. Walk ins will be welcome after noon.

November 1 This year's annual "Scouting for Food" campaign takes place Nov. 1 and 8, 2008.  This annual event helps to replenish the Hopkinton Food Pantry for the holidays and the long winter. The food drive comes at a critical time.  Project Just Because, which operates the food pantry, reports that many more families depend on the pantry but donations are down because of economic problems.
Hopkinton's Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and parents will be distributing plastic bags to all Hopkinton households on Saturday, Nov. 1.  We ask that residents fill the bags with non-perishable grocery items.  Especially needed are canned meat, breakfast foods for children, school snack items, paper products, cleaning products and toiletries. The donated items should be placed near your mailbox by 10 a.m on Saturday, Nov. 8. Scouts will collect the bags between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and bring them to the pantry.  Tax deductible cash donations, made payable to "Project Just Because Food Pantry," are also welcome.  Please send the donations to Project Just Because, Inc., 45 South Street, Unit G, Hopkinton, MA 01748.

This entertaining and evocative workshop will highlight "strength-based" parenting that promotes positive and hope-inspiring ways of connecting and bringing out the best in our kids. Charlie Appelstein, M.S.W. is a nationally prominent youth care specialist and author and president of Appelstein Training Resources, LLC. Mr. Appelstein trains and consults all over the United States as well as internationally, with treatment facilities, foster care programs, parent groups, schools, and detention centers.  He has authored three youth care books that are widely used within the field, including No Such Thing as a Bad Kid: Understanding and Responding to the Challenging Behavior of Troubled Children and Youth. Charlie appears twice a month on New England Cable News, providing parenting tips.

November 5,12,19 R.A.D. is an Internationally taught realistic hands on self defense training class specifically designed for women (12-16 hours). The program teaches and emphasizes awareness, avoidance and physical self defense with the tools we possess with us at all times (hands, feet, elbows, knees, head, etc…). All ages, sizes and physical capabilities are welcome (14, 15 or 16; parental waiver will be needed – 13 and under is too young for this class). The class is free of charge, sponsored by the Hopkinton Police Department. Manuals are provided as are water and light snacks. Casual exercise clothing and an aerobic type of sneaker preferred. November 6 The American Cancer Society and Spirit Financial, LLC will host a planned giving seminar from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm in the Society's New England Division headquarters, 30 Speen Street, Framingham. November 18-20 We are organizing our 10th annual Turkey Drive in the Hopkinton school district to aid needy families in the Metro West area. The Salvation Army in Framingham has informed us that there is a pressing need for provisions during this Thanksgiving season. “This has been a tough year, and the needs are great,” says Daisy Orcutt, Framingham Salvation Army. This year, we would like to help as many families as we can; so again, we need your assistance. Any donation that you can make will help to alleviate hunger in our area and will be deeply appreciated. Traditionally, this has been a way in which students and faculty together have given back to our community.  If you would like to donate a turkey, large or small, you may do so at any of the following times and places: Tuesday, 11/18 - Hopkins: 8:00-10:00 AM (dining hall kitchen), Middle School: 7:00-7:30 AM (entrance near auditorium and Brown Gym) & 1:50-4:30 PM (entrance near auditorium and Brown Gym). Wednesday 11/19 - Elmwood: 7:30-9:00 AM (sign in at office, go to cafeteria) & 2:30-4:30 PM (front entrance of school). The theme this month is Fall/Winter Animal habits, food gathering, habitat, hibernation. November 21-23 "Mud, mud, glorious mud" becomes even more magnificent in transforming hands of "Primarily Potters." Ten of them, plus one basket maker, will be exhibiting in the 6th annual show and sale on Friday, Nov. 21 (9-5), Saturday, Nov. 22 (9-5) and Sunday, Nov. 23 (noon -4) at The Cultural Arts Alliance, 98 Hayden Rowe Street (Rte.85), Hopkinton. Work will include berry bowls and chip 'n dip dishes by Carol Mecagni of Hopkinton; textured shino-glazed slab bowls and unique pins by Mary Edwards of Shrewsbury; functional and decorative pieces with sculpted and hand painted figurative motifs, fired in a soda vapor atmosphere by Barbara Wilson of Hudson; hand carved and functional stoneware inspired by the Czech roots of Hana Reilly of Hopkinton, clay animal banks by Emily Van Nort of Southborough; stir-fry bowls and minivases by Elizabeth Eidlitz of Concord, and hand-woven baskets by Dinny Potenza of Hopkinton. Susan Kaye of Westborough, whose work has a whimsical yet practical approach, believes each of her pieces has a feeling all its own; platters, bowls, vases and mugs by Becky Webber of West Brookfield reflect elements of the natural world in line, pattern and movement; Bonnie Muir of Watertown will have playfully illustrated bowls and tiles, animal spirit shakers and fanciful ornaments; Maureen Englund of Sutton will have hand built functional pieces, vases, serving trays, bowls and Christmas decorations. Show prices range from $3 to $75. 15% of sales go to The Cultural Arts Alliance, and funds from a raffle of ceramic items donated by each of the exhibitors benefit the Hopkinton Parent Teachers Association.

November 21-23 Enter Stage Left regulars Emily Grill and Sinai Tabak Produce How the Grinch Stole Christmas on Stage at Milford High School. The holiday season will be ushered in the weekend before Thanksgiving when Milford High School Theatre Workshop presents a live production of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas on Friday, November 21 and Saturday, Nov. 22 at 7:30PM, with an afternoon matinee on Sunday, November 23 at 2:00. “It’s my dream to produce and direct this holiday play,” said Milford High School (MHS) Senior Emily Grill, who began work on blocking and planning the production last summer with her co-producer MHS Senior Sinai Tabak. “Even though this is our annual drama, and it’s based on the action from the movie made famous by Jim Carrey, we’ve left a little musical treat in for our audience.”

November 23 Community Covenant Church (Hopkinton, MA) is pleased to welcome Dr. R. Boaz Johnson as their morning speaker at 10:00 AM. Dr. Johnson is Professor & Chair of The Department of Biblical and Theological Studies, and Director of The Division of Christian Life and Thought at North Park University in Chicago. Dr. Johnson was born in New Delhi, India, and was trained in a radical Hindu school. In 1973, while in high school, he became a Christian after being given a copy of the New Testament. This gifted speaker and teacher was ordained by the Christian and Missionary Alliance and the Delhi Bible Fellowship, the Evangelical Alliance Mission (India). His ministry experience includes church planting in India and parachurch work with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Johnson earned his doctorate in theological studies and Hebrew Bible from Trinity International University and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. Before his 2003 appointment at North Park University, Dr. Johnson had also taught religion at the College of DuPage (Lombard, IL), and at Fuller Theological Seminary (Pasadena, CA). All are welcome.

November 22 Dan Nichols, a nationally known entertainer specializing in Jewish-style music, will perform at Congregation B’nai Shalom at a coffee house event at 8:00 P.M. Laura Klein, Chairperson of the Congregation’s Music Committee, in announcing the event, explained that “Dan’s singing and guitar playing has been entertaining children, teens, and adults throughout the world for more than a dozen years.”  Doors will open at 7:15 pm, when desserts will be served. This event, which is being funded by the Jewish Federation of Central Massachusetts, is a part of the Tapestry of Jewish Life series.
