August 1,8 radKIDS is the national leader in children's safety education and provides the only holisitic, practical and realistic life skills safety program available for children and parents today.  radKIDS training gives children the tools they need to recognize, avoid and escape potentially dangerous situations, including bullying, assault and abduction.  The radKIDS program is a 12 hour family centered safety education program that emphasizes essential decision-making skills and physical resistance options to escape violence. This program is designed for children from 5-12 years of age.  A few of the program components include: stranger tricks, internet safety, bullying prevention, personal safety, out and about safety, school safety, and realistic physical defense skills against abduction.  Children become empowered, learning to replace the fear, confusion, and panic of dangerous situations with confidence, personal safety skills and self-esteem. Hopkinton residents and parents of 3 young children, Kim and Tim Brennan are certified radKIDS Instructors and are now offering this course to children and families in Hopkinton and surrounding towns.  The next radKIDS class will be held on June 25, 26, 29, & 30 from 8:30 - 11:30 am at 6 Main Street, Hopkinton (the John Warren Masonic Lodge).  The cost for the class is $90 per child ($60 for a sibling) and includes a Family Safety Manual, Safety Activity Book, Certificate, and more.  Another radKIDS class will be offered over the course of 4 Saturdays in July and August.  Dates for this class are July 11 & 18 and August 1 & 8; classes will be held again at the John Warren Masonic Lodge, 6 Main Street from 8:30 - 11:30 am.  The Freemasons of the John Warren Masonic Lodge have graciously donated their space for the radKIDS classes to be held. A free return and practice policy is honored at radKIDS classes across the country.  Once a child has taken the radKIDS class, they can enroll in any radKIDS class, free of charge up to the age of 12, for as many times as they would like. To sign up for one of the radKIDS classes, for more information, or if you are interested in sponsoring a radKIDS class contact Kim Brennan at  kim.brennan@comcast.net.  Space is limited and will be filled on a first come first serve basis.  Plans are in place to offer the radKIDS course again in the fall.  To learn more about radKIDS, visit www.radKIDS.org

August 16 Join us for the Lake Maspenock Family Swim and Paddle Day, Sponsored by the Lake Maspenock Preservation Association, 11:00 am @ Sandy Beach. Rain date is Sunday August 23rd.  Participants from the Lake Maspenock community - wearing flippers or swim fins if desirable - will swim a 300 yard course off Sandy Beach and then hop in their kayaks and canoes to paddle clockwise around the northern perimeter of Lake Maspenock, finishing back at Sandy Beach.  This is a FUN and not a competitive event. Teams of two - one swimmer and one paddle - are welcome. Please come out and cheer everybody on - we hop to have a good showing of lake residents! It is important that swimmers have an open water experience and be able to swim 300 yards safely without assistance. A liability waiver form needs to be filled out and submitted to LMPA representatives before the race begins. Parents must sign for all participants under the age of 18. We advise parents or adult friends who are strong swimmers to swim alongside those who are 16 years old and younger. If you would like to sign the waiver in advance please visit www.lmpa.org for a copy. Participants should be at Sandy Beach by 10:45 am with kayaks or canoes. Parking is limited so it is best to walk or paddle to the beach. We need volunteers with boats and/or with water rescue experience to help us. We were pleased 250+ students attended each of first two IGNITE orientations voluntarily. The orientations exceeded even our own expectations. Sixth grade teachers have commented that the 6th graders the past two school openings have seemed more comfortable and better adjusted than in previous years. The IGNITE sixth grade orientation and transition program is designed to both welcome and support sixth graders by assigning them to a small group led by 1-2 IGNITE Leaders as mentors during their first year of middle school. IGNITE leaders are responsible 8th grade students selected from a large pool of applicants and all meet the qualifications of being a good role model and a positive leader on our campus. The students only orientation will take place in the Brown Gymnasium led by the eighth grade IGNITE Leaders and Mr. Bill Howard from 9AM – 11:30AM. The parent orientation will take place in the Middle School auditorium led by Mr. Jason Webster and/or Mr. Keith Verra from 9AM- 10:30AM.
