June 23 All of Hopkinton is invited to attend a Chamber of Commerce Networking and Barn Raising Event 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm @ Hopkinton Public Library, 13 Main Street. Cost Free. Hopkinton's first BarnRaising™ started about 3 weeks ago when 18 of our neighbors participated in an intensive, seven-step process designed to help them propel a current job search or entrepreneurial endeavor.  For the past 2 weeks, these individuals have helped each other refine their work, and the process culminates in this Barn Raising Event. A "Barn Raising Event" is an open reception or social hour with a ten (10) minute program highlighted about half-way through the event.  During this program, our "guests of honor" - neighbors who are looking for employment or aiming to start their own business - are introduced.  Each person in attendance is asked to think of one (1) thing that he/she can do to help a Guest-of-Honor get closer to their goal.  It doesn't matter what each person does, whether it's big like scheduling an appointment with someone they know, or small like sending an article or piece of advice!  The goal is simply to mobilize the good will of community members to help an individual to find a job or kickstart a new business.  Just like a real "barn raising" - everyone can do something to help

June 25,26,29,30 radKIDS is the national leader in children's safety education and provides the only holisitic, practical and realistic life skills safety program available for children and parents today.  radKIDS training gives children the tools they need to recognize, avoid and escape potentially dangerous situations, including bullying, assault and abduction.  The radKIDS program is a 12 hour family centered safety education program that emphasizes essential decision-making skills and physical resistance options to escape violence. This program is designed for children from 5-12 years of age.  A few of the program components include: stranger tricks, internet safety, bullying prevention, personal safety, out and about safety, school safety, and realistic physical defense skills against abduction.  Children become empowered, learning to replace the fear, confusion, and panic of dangerous situations with confidence, personal safety skills and self-esteem. Hopkinton residents and parents of 3 young children, Kim and Tim Brennan are certified radKIDS Instructors and are now offering this course to children and families in Hopkinton and surrounding towns.  The next radKIDS class will be held on June 25, 26, 29, & 30 from 8:30 - 11:30 am at 6 Main Street, Hopkinton (the John Warren Masonic Lodge).  The cost for the class is $90 per child ($60 for a sibling) and includes a Family Safety Manual, Safety Activity Book, Certificate, and more.  Another radKIDS class will be offered over the course of 4 Saturdays in July and August.  Dates for this class are July 11 & 18 and August 1 & 8; classes will be held again at the John Warren Masonic Lodge, 6 Main Street from 8:30 - 11:30 am.  The Freemasons of the John Warren Masonic Lodge have graciously donated their space for the radKIDS classes to be held. A free return and practice policy is honored at radKIDS classes across the country.  Once a child has taken the radKIDS class, they can enroll in any radKIDS class, free of charge up to the age of 12, for as many times as they would like. To sign up for one of the radKIDS classes, for more information, or if you are interested in sponsoring a radKIDS class contact Kim Brennan at  kim.brennan@comcast.net.  Space is limited and will be filled on a first come first serve basis.  Plans are in place to offer the radKIDS course again in the fall.  To learn more about radKIDS, visit www.radKIDS.org

June 27 The Pan-Massachusetts Challenge Upton Kids Ride will be one of 40 PMC Kids Rides held in neighborhoods throughout New England and beyond. Nearly 7,000 cyclists between the ages of two and 15 will ride between one and 26 miles in mini-bike-a-thons to raise money for cancer research. The PMC Kids Rides are spokes in the PMC wheel, supporting more than 5,500 adult PMC cyclists in their mission to fund cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund. The Pan-Mass Challenge is the two-day, 190-mile bike-a-thon held each August. Since 1980, the PMC has raised nearly $240 million for the Jimmy Fund. PMC Kids Rides offer a way for children to become part of the PMC mission, involving young people in volunteerism and fundraising in a safe and athletic way. To give the PMC Kids Rides an additional push, Patrick Byrne, CEO of e-business Overstock.com, has challenged the PMC Kids Rides program to raise $1 million. If they do, he will contribute an additional $500,000 to the PMC Kids Rides. After the tykes pulled in $728,000 in 2008, and with this new corporate challenge, there is no telling how far they will push in 2009. The PMC Upton Kids Ride expects 200 children, ages three to 15, to ride 15 miles near Blackstone Valley Regional High School, Upton. The PMC Upton Kids Ride was started by retired Chief of Police Tom Stockwell and Officer Lisa Vass. The PMC Upton Kids Ride will hold a party after the ride, which will include refreshments, music, face painting and more. The ride hopes to raise $30,000.. The PMC Upton Kids Ride will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 27 at Blackstone Valley Regional High School, 65 Pleasant Street.

June 27 June 27th will be the final recycle effort for the Hopkinton Lions Club. For many years Hopkinton residents have stepped forward with their recyclable bottles and cans, delivering them to Colella’s Market parking lot on the last Saturday of each month, enabling the Lions Club to gather funds to carry out their many service projects. While the club’s main focus is assistance with sight issues, providing eye exams, glasses, and sometimes surgery in many parts of the world, the Hopkinton club also supports local food and heating needs and programs for our town’s youth. Service will continue to be the club’s focus and they thank the many Hopkinton contributors for their years of giving. Recycle hours for this month will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. – rain or shine.
