May 1,2,3 The Hopkinton Middle School Drama department is proud to present the timeless Broadway musical GREASE (school version). This family-friendly adaptation of the popular stage production will be performed on Friday May 1st at 7:00pm, Saturday May 2nd at 7pm and Sunday, May 3rd at 2pm. Lead by 8th graders Leah Raczynski as “Sandy,” Alex Kirshy as “Danny,” Blair Guild as “Rizzo” and Liam Horsman as “Kenickie” the cast of over 100 middle school students enlivens the stage with the innocence and energy that defines the decade. Bobby-soxsers, greasers, Pink Ladies, cheerleaders and Beauty School Angels come together to bring us popular musical numbers such as “Summer Nights” and “We Go Together.” The talented cast of actors, singers and dancers will draw the audience into this nostalgic look at the 50’s with memorable scenes from a drive-in movie and the high school prom, complete with the Hully-Gully, the Madison and, of course, the Hand-Jive. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students/seniors and can be purchased in advance at the Middle School Office or at the door the evening/day of the performance.

May 1 At 7:00 pm., HopNews will again sponsor on HCAM TV, the live broadcast of a candidate's Roundtable, this time featuring the candidates for the Board of Selectmen, incumbent Mary Pratt and challengers Michelle Gates and Todd Cestari. The format is a relaxed, seated setting with David Hamacher, entrepreneur and former Chairman of the Elementary School Building Committee, as the Moderator. As usual, we ask that HopNews readers send the questions they would like the candidates to ask to David Hamacher at: davidham@comcast.net. The candidates will receive the questions in advance, giving them time to best express themselves to the viewers. David will draw from those questions, but ask follow ups whenever and wherever the spirit leads him.

The program will be led by certified hypnotist Erika Slater, CH, at the Whitin Community Center, Northbridge, MA. Advance registration is required at www.quitsmoking4ms.info or by calling the Whitin Community Center at 508-234-8184. Class size is limited. The program will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 and costs $97 per person. Ms. Slater is offering a special reduced rate for this program and is donating all proceeds from the event to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. This June, several local riders known as the “Riders on the Storm” are participating in the Cape Cod Getaway, a two-day bike trek from Boston to Provincetown. Ms. Slater has agreed to donate all profits from this event towards the team’s fundraising goal. Each year, an estimated 443,000 people die prematurely from smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke and another 8.6 million have a serious illness caused by smoking, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Further, the economic burden of tobacco use is the significant — more than $96 billion per year in medical expenditures and another $97 billion per year resulting from lost productivity. For smokers, it’s time to take action now. The Surgeon General concludes that quitting smoking has major and immediate health benefits for men and women of all ages. These benefits apply to people who already have smoking-related diseases and those who don't. Smokers can choose a better future.
