Town of Hopkinton has invited the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning
Organization (MPO) to host a Walkable Community Workshop. The workshop is
free and open to the public. It will be held Saturday, October 3, from 1:30
to 3:30 PM in the Fire Station Meeting Room, 73 Main Street. There are many
reasons to improve the pedestrian environment. Walking is good for our
health. Walking instead of driving is good for the environment (those short
auto trips are particularly damaging to air quality). And an inviting walking
area attracts diners and shoppers, thereby promoting economic development.
The workshop will consist of a presentation on ways to improve walkability in
a community. Participants will then take a walk through Hopkinton, returning
to the Fire Station Meeting Room to discuss ways to help make the area more
inviting for pedestrians. To register or for further information, contact
Elaine Lazarus, Hopkinton Planning Director, at 508-497-9755, or
elainel@hopkinton.org (e-mail) or contact Cathy Buckley, of the MPO staff, October 3 Hopkinton

Green Tour 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm @ 14 Parkman Street, Westborough. Learn About
Green and Super Energy Efficient Remodeling Techniques at a Free Green
Educational Event. The Renovate Green Home Tour takes place at a recently
green renovated, historic Westborough home. During this special event,
homeowners have the rare opportunity to step inside a historic home that has
been completely renovated with energy efficiency and green practices in
mind. Hidden inside the classic Greek revival home are surprising 21st
century renovations that allow this over 150-year old home to outperform
newly-built traditional homes. Bill Hulstrunk, SuperInsulation Expert and
Technical Manager for National Fiber, believes superinsulation techniques are
one of the best ways homeowners can maximize the energy efficiency of their
homes, no matter what age the home is. “A fitting tribute to the old,
historic homes of Massachusetts is to make them better by using green
renovation techniques. This super- efficient home has estimated annual
heating costs of $656, significantly less than it takes to heat an average
home in the area,” he adds. The Renovate Green Home Tour will have several
industry-experts on hand to discuss the benefits of making green renovations
to their current homes. Attendees can learn how energy-efficient
windows can improve the comfort and performance of their home. Discover the
benefits and savings provided by utilizing superinsulation techniques in
their home. See how to transform a historic home into a super-efficient 21st
century home. Find out what a zero-net energy house is and how it’s changing
the way houses are built. Learn more about rebates and other special
programs that make green, energy-efficient remodeling more affordable. October 17 Lawrence

Through History. As part of Upton’s 275th Celebration Friends of Upton State
Forest and Upton Open Space Committee are partnering on a monthly series of
themed hikes that will be held on trails at Upton State Forest and other
public lands in Upton. The general theme of the hikes will be “Hiking Through
History” and will look at the evolution of the lands through the years and
the history of settlement, farming and logging on them. The next hike
is October 18, 2009 at Upton State Forest and the theme is “Company 2105,
Camp SP-25, CCC at Upton State Forest”. This will be an interpretive hike of
the CCC Camp, water holes, picnic area and stone steps built by the Civilian
Conservation Corps. The destination will be Dean Pond where you will learn
about the men who built the dam and pond. There will be a display of
historic photos and memorabilia inside the historic Administration Building
of the CCC Camp. The camp is located in the Headquarters area of Upton State
Forest at the intersection of Southborough and Westborough Roads in Upton.
The building will be open from noon to 4 PM so if you cannot join the hike
you are welcome to visit and see the display. Those going on the hike
can register between noon and 1 PM and should meet at the Administration
Building. The hike will begin promptly at 1 PM. This is a moderate hike that
usually lasts about two hours on a well-traveled loop with some uneven
terrain and erosion. There will be a short option for those who want to turn
back at the CCC picnic area without continuing to the pond. We will travel to
Dean Pond via Park Road stopping at CCC sites along the way. Return will be
via Loop Rd. Watch for details of the November 15 hike at the former
Stefan’s Farm property on Mechanic St. now owned by the Town of Upton. Theme
for that hike is “Land, History and Stone Structures”. On all hikes, we
ask that you dress for the weather and wear appropriate footgear. Don’t
forget water, sunscreen and insect repellant. Children are welcome with
supervision. A liability waiver will be required prior to your participation.
