October 3 The Town of Hopkinton has invited the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) to host a Walkable Community Workshop. The workshop is free and open to the public. It will be held Saturday, October 3, from 1:30 to 3:30 PM in the Fire Station Meeting Room, 73 Main Street. There are many reasons to improve the pedestrian environment. Walking is good for our health. Walking instead of driving is good for the environment (those short auto trips are particularly damaging to air quality). And an inviting walking area attracts diners and shoppers, thereby promoting economic development. The workshop will consist of a presentation on ways to improve walkability in a community. Participants will then take a walk through Hopkinton, returning to the Fire Station Meeting Room to discuss ways to help make the area more inviting for pedestrians. To register or for further information, contact Elaine Lazarus, Hopkinton Planning Director, at 508-497-9755, or elainel@hopkinton.org (e-mail) or contact Cathy Buckley, of the MPO staff,
at (617) 973-7100 (voice), (617 ) 973-7089 (TTY), or walkable@bostonmpo.org (e-mail).

The Renovate Green Home Tour takes place at a recently green renovated, historic Westborough home.  During this special event, homeowners have the rare opportunity to step inside a historic home that has been completely renovated with energy efficiency and green practices in mind.  Hidden inside the classic Greek revival home are surprising 21st century renovations that allow this over 150-year old home to outperform newly-built traditional homes. Bill Hulstrunk, SuperInsulation Expert and Technical Manager for National Fiber, believes superinsulation techniques are one of the best ways homeowners can maximize the energy efficiency of their homes, no matter what age the home is. “A fitting tribute to the old, historic homes of Massachusetts is to make them better by using green renovation techniques. This super- efficient home has estimated annual heating costs of $656, significantly less than it takes to heat an average home in the area,” he adds. The Renovate Green Home Tour will have several industry-experts on hand to discuss the benefits of making green renovations to their current homes.  Attendees can learn how energy-efficient windows can improve the comfort and performance of their home. Discover the benefits and savings provided by utilizing superinsulation techniques in their home. See how to transform a historic home into a super-efficient 21st century home. As part of Upton’s 275th Celebration Friends of Upton State Forest and Upton Open Space Committee are partnering on a monthly series of themed hikes that will be held on trails at Upton State Forest and other public lands in Upton. The general theme of the hikes will be “Hiking Through History” and will look at the evolution of the lands through the years and the history of settlement, farming and logging on them.  The next hike is October 18, 2009 at Upton State Forest and the theme is “Company 2105, Camp SP-25, CCC at Upton State Forest”. This will be an interpretive hike of the CCC Camp, water holes, picnic area and stone steps built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The global economic turmoil experienced over the past 18 months has effected many organizations, and the Orchestra has not been immune from this impact.  Your attendance (and suggested donation of $20 per person)  will go a long way toward keep the music cooking in our community for another 30 years.
