April 1 Hopkinton Curbside Collection Overflow Bag Program On January 12, 2010, the Board of Selectmen voted to reduce the number of trash barrels the Town’s curbside collection contractor (E.L. Harvey) can pick up per week per household, from a maximum of four (4) 39–gallon barrels to two (2) 39–gallon barrels. Pursuant to the board’s vote, households who wish to put out more than two (2) barrels of trash can purchase Overflow Bags. These overflow bags are 33-gallons and each household is allowed a maximum allowable weight of 50 pounds per bag. Overflow bags will be available starting Thursday March 11th at the following locations: Colella’s Supermarket 61 Main Street and Hopkinton Lumber Co. 118 Main Street. The cost of the bags is $1.25 each and they are sold in packages of five (5) for $6.25. Sales tax does not apply. The program will take effect April 1st with a grace period of one (1) month for households to transition into the program. Enforcement will begin May 3, 2010.

 

April 1  Pick your Lucky Number At Cornells. For the 10K Draw Thursday, March 25 from 7 pm to 9 pm. Join us April 1st at Cornell’s from 7 pm to 9 pm for a chance to pick your lucky number for the HLL $10,000 Draw! This will be the one chance to pick your lucky number. All attendees will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win their $100 back at the end of the evening!! All other tickets will be randomly assigned. Cornell’s will be serving complimentary pizza and other tasty snacks to those attending.

April 5 Massachusetts is the home to 10,300 IT firms, making IT a critical sector of the Massachusetts economy.  In fact, the IT industry employs more than 178,000 workers, with another 50,000 workers employed in technical occupations outside of the core IT sectors – totaling 5.5% of all Massachusetts workers.  With average wages of $87,784, those employed in the IT sector earn almost double the average statewide average salary. Senator Karen Spilka, along with the Senate Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies, is holding a forum to highlight the importance of the IT sector in Massachusetts on Monday, April 5, 2010 at EMC in Franklin. The forum will also explore educational initiatives designed to preserve our leadership in this area. The event will feature a tour of EMC2’s manufacturing facility, followed by a discussion of the sector with industry experts. Topics will include updates on the recent John Adams Innovation Institute and UMASS Donohue Institute reports on the industry, the status of hi-tech growth and manufacturing in Massachusetts, a regional look at the IT sector, and STEM Education programs designed to train the next generation of IT workers. Participants include Verizon, the UMASS Donohue Institute, the John Adams Innovation Institute. Mass Innovation & Technology Exchange (MITX) , IBM, Worcester Research Bureau, 495/MetroWest Corridor Partnership, Mass Technology Leadership Council and the Mass Business Roundtable, with others to be confirmed

April 10 The Woodville Trailbusters 4H Club is holding their first ever Annual Springtime Egg Hunt from 10am to 2pm at 25 Winter St. in Hopkinton.  Meet costumed characters, enjoy a petting zoo and ride in the hay wagon.  The cost to attend is $3 per child under the age of 12; an adult must accompany all children.  Families can enjoy popcorn and snow cones for purchase.  All proceeds benefit the Woodville Trailbusters 4H Club.

 

April 10-19  The Hopkinton Runners Festival will celebrate the 2,500th year Anniversary of the Battle of Marathon.  It's also in recognition of the sister-city relationship between Marathon, Greece and Hopkinton, Massachusetts.

 

 

 

 

April 11 Millions of children today -most of them in Africa -are, through no fault of their own, caught up in the life-and-death drama of one of the greatest humanitarian crises of our time.

 

First Congregational Church of Hopkinton is partnering with World Vision to bring an interactive walk-through exhibit to the Metrowest area. This Experience now touring the U.S., will transport you into the heart of Africa and the life of a child affected by the AIDS crisis. The exhibit combines a stirring audio tour with captivating photography to give a whole new perspective.

 

This museum-quality Experience will be available to tour at First Congregational Church, 146 E. Main St. in Hopkinton April 11-18 and is free to the public.

April 11 An event to celebrate poetry & the arts is being held on April 11th at Elmwood - Haiku & High Tea - to raise funds for a Hopkinton performing art center (CAA barn). April 16  Friends of Upton State Forest are planning a potluck supper for April 16, 6 PM at the United Parish Church, 1 Central Square, in Upton. After supper, at 7 PM, there will be a program by Todd McLeish, author of the books; Golden Wings and Hairy Toes and Basking with Humpbacks. Mr. McLeish will show slides taken from 6 photos in his books and talk about the experiences he had doing research for the books. Both books will be available to purchase following the program. The public is welcome to attend the supper. Anyone not able to come for supper is invited to come at 7 PM for the program. Raffles will be held to support the work of the Friends and their new T-shirts will be available to purchase. There is no charge to attend. April 30 Hopkinton, MA --- The Hopkinton Middle School Drama department is proud to present OKLAHOMA the classic musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein. The talented cast and crew of over 100 students propels the audience to the Midwest during the time of farmers, cowmen and box socials. From the opening of “Oh What A Beautiful Mornin’” through an enchanting dream sequence featuring the middleschoolers as saloon girls and cowfolk, to the rousing finale featuring the favorite “Oklahoma!” the show will appeal to all ages. Audiences will swoon as Laurey and Curly, played by Catherine Cote and Kyran Schnur, deny their love for one another in “People Will Say We’re In Love.” And laugh along as Paige Guarino as Ado Annie finds that she “Cain’t Say No” to two men; her hometown sweetheart, Will played by Austin Adams, and the intriguing peddler portrayed by Adam Graubart. “This incredibly gifted cast and crew does an amazing job of embodying the spirit and sweetness of the time period” states Ms. Hallyann Gifford, Hopkinton Middle School drama teacher and Director of the show. “Their talent and personalities combined with sets designed by a dedicated crew of parent and student volunteers create a beautiful show reminiscent of days gone by.” OKLAHOMA! Runs Friday April 30 at 7pm, Saturday May 1 at 7pm and Sunday May 2 at 2pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students/seniors and can be purchased in advance at the Middle School Office or at the door the evening/day of the performance.
