MIDDLESEX SHERIFF JAMES V. DIPAOLA JOINS THE

"BEACON HILL GANG" TO SUPPORT NEW ANTI-CRIME LEGISLATION

CAMBRIDGE — Sheriff James V. DiPaola joined a bi-partisan group of Massachusetts lawmakers including Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, Senator Jarrett Barrios (author of the bill), Attorney General Thomas Reilly, Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley and Middlesex District Attorney Martha Coakley, among others. The anti-crime legislation would most notably create a state-wide witness protection program designed to combat the increasing instances of intimidation of witnesses and victims.

Citing British author and philosopher Edmund Burke, Sheriff DiPaola stated: "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men and women to do nothing.  Well, I am here today to say in Massachusetts that is not the case.  I am here to join the Beacon Hill Gang, the legislators, the Attorney General, the District Attorneys and the Governor's Office and stand with them to put the gangs in Massachusetts on notice that they have competition for control of our communities." Members of the Black Ministerial Alliance, the Boston Ten Point Coalition and other public safety officials from around the Commonwealth also attended the press conference on the State House's Grand Staircase.

"The public safety and criminal justice system will now have a new tool to protect those who join us to take a stand against these criminal organizations. With this new statewide witness protection program, we tell witnesses and victims that they can take back their streets. Together, as a team, we will combat witness intimidation and gang violence; we will make it more difficult for gangs and other violent criminals to operate in Massachusetts."

PBS documentary on boys to feature

Touchstone Community School classroom

GRAFTON – Kindergarten teacher Jane Katch and her students at Touchstone Community School in Grafton will appear in an upcoming PBS documentary about the emotional development of boys in America today. RAISING CAIN, hosted by child psychologist Michael Thompson, Ph.D. and co-author of the best-selling book “Raising Cain”, premieres January 12 at 9:00 p.m. on WGBH Channel 2.

Produced by Powderhouse in association with Oregon Public Broadcasting, this two-hour documentary provides surprising new research about boys’ inner workings, dispelling a number of commonly held misconceptions, and highlights innovative programs that are bringing out the best in boys.

Jane Katch has written extensively about bullying, conflict resolution and violent play-acting among young children, including two books “Under Deadman ’s Skin: Lessons on Bullying and Teasing From a Preschool Classroom” (Beacon Press 2002) and “They Don’t Like Me: Discovering the Meaning of Children’s Violent Play” (2003). Her experience as a preschool and kindergarten teacher has led her to develop democratic classrooms in which children learn to talk about feelings that American culture typically suppresses, particularly in boys. The PBS crew spent 3 days filming the Touchstone students in November 2004.

About Touchstone: Touchstone Community School is a non-profit school for children ages 4 through 14, serving Grafton and surrounding communities. The school is committed to educating the whole child, weaving together the social, emotional, intellectual, physical, ethical and creative aspects of a child’s growth and development.

WESTBOROUGH

CSCT awarded grant

December 22, 2005 — The Cedar Swamp Conservation Trust (CSCT) has received notification from the Greater Worcester Community Foundation/Water and Land Stewardship Fund of a grant award to do water quality testing on the feeder brooks of the Westborough Cedar Swamp. “This funding will help the CSCT volunteers expand the existing stream flow monitoring program and include quality testing of these vital resources”, stated John Craycroft CSCT President.

Currently volunteers from CSCT, with help from members of the Friends of Lake Whitehall, record stream flow levels on the Jackstraw, Piccadilly, Whitehall and Indian Brooks for the USGS Upper Sudbury River Study and the State Riverway’s Program. The additional funding will allow the expansion of the stream flow monitoring to include the Rutters Brook and to do the water quality sampling on the Jackstraw, Piccadilly, Rutters and Whitehall Brooks which feed the Cedar Swamp. These feeder brooks of the Cedar Swamp ACEC, as well as the Cedar Swamp itself, are classified as Outstanding Resource Waters (ORWs) under the state environmental regulations which prohibit degradation to the water quality from stormwater and other forms of discharge. Increases in impervious surface area and other development activities can disturb soil and release sediment and other pollutants into the local streams. Contributed content.
