"It puts lotion on itself" is a line from Silence of the Lambs, when the purpetrator had his victim in a pit and told her to put lotion on. He referred to her as "it" as a way to de-humanize her and not feel sorry for what he was doing. I am sure the writer who refers to Maeve as "it" does not have dehumanization on his/her mind, but it may in fact have that end result with some readers. It is Maeve's fault for being obscure about its gender by not answering questions regarding it. And it also brings to mind the need for a third-person, gender-neutral personal pronoun in the English language.
