Girls Track Team at Reggie Lewis

by Linda Clancy

January 6, 2010 — The Girls Track team had a wonderful start to the season with excellent performances at the Winter Festival for Small Schools held recently at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Many members of the team set personal records and several girls qualified for States by virtue of their performances.

The morning festivities began with three Hopkinton girls running in the mile competition.  Rebecca Govoni came in 8th (5:47.87), Leah Holmes was 20th (6:02.04) and Alice LaGoy was 25th (6:06.83) out of the 45 runners.  Govoni’s time qualifies her for the State Championships to be held in February.  File photo, above.

In the 300 meter race, Hopkinton was represented by two freshmen and one new sophomore.  Taylor Dourney (47.95), Jordyn Labriola (48.13), and Jordan Doherty (48.83) all ran great races at their first trips to Reggie.  The girls placed 19th, 20th and 24th respectively out of a field of 67 runners.  These times bode well for the continued success of the team.

Two Hopkinton Hillers entered the 600 meter race and two Hopkinton Hillers finished in the top ten.  Kim Bolick (1:41.73) captured 2nd place and Devin Dourney (1:48.28) was 9th in the field of 43 girls.  Bolick’s time qualified for States.

The 1000 meter race was also very exciting with five Hopkinton runners finishing in the top 15 out of a field of 37.  Kellie Lodge (3.13.01) was 3rd, Tam Mills (3:13.25) was 4th,  Haley Anderson (3:17.77) was 7th, Andrea Gendron (3.27.16) was 13th and Abigail Perreault (3.28.92) captured the 15th spot.  The performances of Lodge, Mills and Anderson all qualified them for States.

Junior, Megan Kelley was the lone Hopkinton runner in the two mile.  She had a great race coming in 9th place with a time of 14.26.76.

In the 55m hurdles, four girls ran and two qualified for the finals.  Dana Cavedon (10.02q), Kelly O’Connor (10.19q), Mirelle Raza (10.24) and Kaelynn Maloney (11.83) all ran well.  Kelly O’Connor (9.81) finished 7th in the finals.

The 55meter dash also saw some great performances.  New team member, Jenny Curley (8.05q) qualified for the finals by coming in 10th out of the 71 participants.  Curley went on to finish 13th in the finals with a time of 8.08.  Sheena DuPuy (22nd at 8.24), Nicole Mellor (26th at 8.33), Samantha Bond (29th at 8.41) and Emma Johnson (38th at 8.66) also ran quick races.

In field events, Hannah Krueger (4-06) and Marissa Mahoney (4-06) came in 12th and 15th respectively.  Jen Lynds finished 9th in the long jump at 13-08.50 and Jane Alexander jumped 11-05.25 ending up 32nd.  The Hillers had three girls excel in the shot put.  Marjorie Olney came in 5th with a throw of 28’ 8.25, followed by Samantha Oleson in 6th with 28’ 7 and freshman Jackie Chirco at 26’11 for 13th place.

The Hillers ended this exciting meet with strong relay teams.  The 4x200 relay team placed 8th with a time of 1:56.82.  The 4x400 team placed third with a time of 4:31.43.  The most exciting relay event was the 4x800 team of Lodge, Bolick, Mills and Anderson.  This team ran a blazing race to capture 1st place with a time of 10:11.90.  The time for the 4x400 and the 4x800 qualifies each team for States.

When asked to comment on the team’s performance, Coach Brian Hall explained, “The WinterFest meet is very early - our goal is to be ready at the end of the season not to peak in mid-December.  However it is one of few opportunities to race at the fast Reggie Lewis Track so we did want to take advantage and get athletes qualified for the State Meet.   For our freshmen and new athletes it was an exciting first exposure to the Boston facility and the atmosphere of an invitational. We accomplished our goals and I believe discovered new talent both in new athletes and older athletes trying new events.”

The girls face Ashland and Medway this Wednesday, January 6th at 3:30 pm and Holliston on Saturday at 9:00 am. Since Holliston comes to Hopkinton as the only other undefeated team in the TVL, this meet should be very exciting. Both meets are at the Hopkinton Field House. Come and support the girls as they continue their quest for the TVL title.
