Teamwork + Imagination + Creativity = Solutions

The citizens of Hopkinton have a reason to be proud. We have a fifth grade Destination ImagiNation team that ranked as one of the most creative in the state at the DI Massachusetts State Finals held March 31, 2007. The team members are: Mackenzie Britt, Aidan Cassidy, Christopher Sellman, Sean Winthrop, and Matt Wolf and students at Hopkins School. The volunteer team managers are Tracy Cassidy and Margie Sellman.

DI is the largest worldwide creative problem solving competition for teams in kindergarten through college. Those involved with DI discover that creative solutions come from teamwork, cooperation and risk taking. The fact that every person has unique qualities, interests, and strengths is celebrated in DI and is key to the most creative teams. In this year’s program this 5th grade team chose the “card-DI-ology” challenge. After five months of teambuilding, brainstorming, negotiating, planning, testing, revising, and practicing, the team presented a structure made from standard playing cards that was 7 ¾ inches tall, 3 inches square, and weighed 1/10 of a pound. The structure held over 200 pounds. They also created a play set in an imaginary jungle with an insect hill that exploded like a volcano. Instead of magma, insects made from playing cards shot out the top of the insect hill. They also wowed the judges with the scenery that was made to rotate from a day scene to a night scene as the play progressed.

The teams next Destination is the Global Finals which will be held in Knoxville, Tennessee on May 23-26, 2007. The team will be joined by over 5,000 participants from forty-five states and fourteen countries. It is a great opportunity for them and they are proud to represent the town of Hopkinton and the State of Massachusetts at such an incredible event.

The team is now faced with another “challenge”. They need to raise over $8,000 to cover the expense of sending the team to Tennessee for this once in a life time opportunity. In the past, through many fund raising activities and the generosity of many Hopkinton residents, local businesses, families and friends, another DI team was able to represent Hopkinton and Massachusetts at the Global Finals in 2001. This team of boys is asking for any support you can give them to make their dream a reality. With less than seven weeks to accomplish this goal, the push is on. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
