HYDE PARK MAN INDICTED FOR POSSESSING AND DISTRIBUTING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
BOSTON – A Suffolk County Grand Jury has returned indictments against a Hyde Park man for allegedly possessing and distributing child pornography on his computer, Attorney General Martha Coakley announced. Raphael Chiu, age 21, was charged with Dissemination or Possession of Obscene Matter, Dissemination of Child Pornography, and Possession of Child Pornography (4 counts). “We allege that Mr. Chiu used his computer to obtain child pornography and that he distributed it over the Internet,” AG Martha Coakley said. “Our office is committed to protecting children and we will continue to aggressively investigate and prosecute online predators that seek to unlawfully exploit children on the Internet. Such actions will not be tolerated in the Commonwealth.” In March 2010, State Police investigators assigned to the Attorney General’s Office conducted an online investigation of computer systems offering known child pornography images and movies over file-sharing networks. Officers observed a system offering known child pornography in the area of Hyde Park and tracked the computer system to Chiu’s residence. On April 15, 2010, State Police obtained and executed a search warrant authorizing the search of Chiu’s home for depictions of child pornography. Investigators discovered that Chiu was in possession of images of child pornography and that he had allegedly shared some of them over the file-sharing network. Chiu was arrested without incident during the course of the search. Following his arrest, Chiu was arraigned on April 16, 2010, before Judge Michael Coyne in the West Roxbury Division of the Boston Municipal Court, at which time he entered a plea of not guilty and was released on $200 cash bail. Judge Coyne set several conditions of bail, including that Chiu have no contact with children under the age of 18, that he check in with probation on a weekly basis, and that he not use a computer while the case is pending. Chiu was ordered to sign a waiver allowing the Probation Department to monitor his compliance with the order not to use a computer system. A Suffolk County Grand Jury returned indictments against Chiu late yesterday. Chiu is scheduled to be arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court on June 30, 2010. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Julie Ross of Attorney General Martha Coakley’s Cyber Crime Division. It was investigated by Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Attorney General’s Office. |
