Man Arraigned On Murder Charges In Connection With Winchester With Quadruple Homicide

WOBURN- A Winchester man has been arraigned on murder charges in connection with the quadruple homicide in Winchester, Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone informed the public today.

Thomas Mortimer, IV., 43, was arraigned this morning in Woburn District Court on four counts of murder in the first degree.  Woburn District Court Judge James Barretto ordered Mortimer held without bail.

His next court date is a probable cause hearing scheduled for August 10 at 9am in Woburn District Court.

According to authorities, the four victims’ bodies were discovered Wednesday at approximately 11:30am inside a residence at 2 Windsong Lane by a relative who was accompanied by Town of Winchester Emergency Responder personnel during a well being check.

A crime scene warrant was subsequently obtained and authorities were able to enter the premises and determine that four victims were deceased, two adult females and two children. The victims have been identified as Thomas Mortimer, age 4; Charlotte Mortimer, age 2; the children’s mother, Laura Stone Mortimer, age 41; and Laura’s mother, Ragna Ellen Stone, age 64.

Authorities are alleging that the defendant murdered four members of his family after an argument with his wife and ongoing marital discord.

Authorities had asked yesterday for public assistance in locating Mortimer.  Mortimer was arrested yesterday after he was sighted in Montague, MA at approximately 11:45am by a father and son.  The witnesses then copied the plate number of the vehicle Mortimer was driving and reported it to local police.  Mortimer was apprehended in Bernardston after attempting to flee and was arrested by members of the Bernardston Police Department at approximately 1:13pm.

The investigation into the circumstances of the crimes continues.

The cause of deaths is pending autopsies that are being conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (ME).

These charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

This case is being investigated by Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and Winchester Police Department with assistance from the United States Marshall Service, Montague Police Department, Connecticut State Police and Avon, CT Police Department, New Hampshire State Police and Bartlett, NH Police Department; Vermont State Police and Andover Police Department.

The Assistant District Attorneys assigned to the case are Adrienne Lynch and John McEvoy.  The Victim Witness Advocate assigned is Anne Foley.
