Waltham Man Charged In Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash

WALTHAM – A Waltham man has been charged in connection with a motor vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a 9 year old boy, Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone informed the public today.

Philip Wuonola, 19, of Waltham, has been charged with motor vehicle homicide, following the May 5 motor vehicle crash in Waltham that resulted in the death of 9 year old, Daniel Raymundo.

An arraignment date has not been set.

According to authorities, at approximately 4:34 pm, on May 5, Waltham police responded to the intersection of Adams Street and Walnut Street for report of a motor vehicle crash. Upon arrival, police observed a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee lying on its driver’s side. Police immediately observed the victim, who had been ejected from the jeep and was lying unresponsive in the street.  Police also observed the female adult operator of the jeep who had also been ejected and her leg was trapped under the driver’s door. A one year old child was found inside the jeep secured in a child safety seat.

The victim was transported by ambulance to Newton Wellesley Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The operator of the jeep and the infant were both transported by Med-Flight to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and survived.

A second vehicle, a 2002 Mazda Protégé, was observed at the scene with front end damage. The driver of the second vehicle was identified as the defendant. He was uninjured in the crash and refused medical treatment.

Waltham Police immediately began an investigation into the circumstances of the crash.  At the conclusion of the investigation, it was determined that the defendant had allegedly been traveling west on Walnut Street and failed to stop for a posted stop sign at the intersection of Walnut Street and Adams Street. As the defendant entered the intersection, he allegedly collided with the jeep that was traveling south on Adams Street on the driver side.  Following the initial impact, the jeep flipped onto its side.
