State Police, US Marshals Find, Arrest Rape Suspect who had Escaped from Hospital

Massachusetts State Police and United States Marshals this afternoon found and apprehended Anthony Flye, 38, the rape suspect who escaped from custody while at a New Bedford hospital. Flye had escaped March 25 from a bathroom at St. Luke’s Hospital, where he had been taken for treatment after injuring himself after jumping down a stairwell in a courtroom, and had been the subject of a manhunt by numerous law enforcement agencies.

As a result of their ongoing investigation into Flye’s whereabouts, troopers from the State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section today directed their attention to the area around the intersection of Routes 6 and 88 in Westport. At approximately 2:15 p.m. today, troopers and marshals located a man believed to be Flye on foot on the side of Route 6. State Trooper David Reis approached the man as he walked along Route 6 under the Route 88 overpass. Reis confirmed that the man was Flye and immediately placed him into custody without incident with the assistance of Trooper Robert Gillmore of the K9 Section.

Following his arrest, Flye was brought to the Dartmouth State Police barracks to be booked on warrants charging him with multiple rape and sexual assault crimes for incidents that occurred between 2004 and 2006, as well as a new warrant charging him with escape. For information on Flye’s arraignment, please contact the Bristol District Attorney’s Office.

Everett School Custodian, JV Basketball Coach Arraigned On Child Rape, Indecent Assault Charges

EVERETT – Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone’s office informed the public today that an Everett man has been arraigned in connection with the alleged rape and indecent assault of a 12-year-old boy.

Robert  J. Shea, 57, of Everett, was arrested Sunday evening and arraigned this morning in Malden District Court  on charges of  forcible child rape (two counts) and indecent assault and battery on a child under 14  (three counts).  Malden District Court Judge Matthew J. Nestor ordered Shea held on $15,000 cash bail with conditions including: no contact with victim and his family, no unsupervised contact with children under age 16, and GPS monitoring.

Shea is employed as a custodian and the junior varsity basketball coach at the Everett Public Schools.

“These are truly disturbing allegations,” District Attorney Leone said. “We allege that the defendant, who was known and trusted by the victim, took advantage of that trust by repeatedly raping and assaulting this vulnerable 12-year-old boy.”

According to the facts of the case as presented at arraignment, it is alleged that the defendant, who was known to the boy, repeatedly raped and assaulted the victim at Shea’s Everett residence and in the former Everett High School building, to which Shea had access as a custodian. The rapes and assaults are alleged to have occurred over a period of months in 2007.

The victim came forward to Everett Police on Friday. Everett Police and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Child Abuse Unit conducted the investigation which led to Shea’s arrest on Sunday.

Members of the public who have information that they believe could be helpful to the investigation can call the Middlesex District Attorney’s Child Abuse Unit at 781-897-8400.

Shea will next appear in Malden District Court on May 5 for a pretrial conference.

These charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
