Senator Spilka Named Member of Department of Corrections Advisory Council
Senator Spilka is thrilled to have been chosen by Senate President Travaglini to represent the Senate on this important Council and is looking forward to working with the Department of Corrections to implement the recommendations of the Corrections Reform Commission. The Commission’s initiatives should improve the success of the Commonwealth’s correction work with inmate populations, increase the professionalism the DOC staff and, most importantly protect the taxpayers of Massachusetts.
The Department of Corrections Advisory Council consists of 17 members, 11 of whom are appointed by the Governor. Currently 6 of the administrations 11 appointments are left unfilled.
Spilka commented, “Though it is clear that the DOC is doing a great deal in terms of innovation, there are structural and programmatic improvements that still need to be made in order to reach our objectives for the inmate and post-release populations. I am ready to get to work and I call upon the Romney-Healey Administration to fill the remaining seats and enable the council to do the actual business it was created to do.” FULL STORY
Senator Spilka previously chaired a subcommittee of the Female Offender Review Panel, a result of one of eighteen recommendations made by the Commission. The subcommittee, chaired by Senator Spilka was charged with addressing issues of reducing the overcrowding of female offender populations and assessing the booking and admissions of female offenders and released its findings in October 2005.
