Elizabeth “Betty”
(Barr) Fitzpatrick, 78
HOPKINTON –
Elizabeth “Betty” (Barr)
Fitzpatrick, a local voice in town conservation and a lifelong
animal and nature lover died Monday, March 30, 2009 at the Metrowest Medical Center in Framingham, after a long illness.
Born in Westborough, MA, she was the daughter of Ormond T. and
Dorothy (Molt) Barr and attended Westborough schools. An avid
athlete who still holds the school record for the long toss, she
graduated with the class of 1949 and began a career working with
animals at a local veterinarian.
She married in 1953 and she and her
late husband, Thomas B. Fitzpatrick (who died in 1990), founded
one of the most successful animal boarding and grooming kennels,
Saddle Hill Kennels, which they ran until retiring in 1987. She
bred and raised AKC Champion English Springer Spaniels, which
became her favorite breed. On the kennel property, she also
spent many hours in her vegetable garden and in running a fully
self sufficient organic farm, complete with sheep, chickens,
pigs, goats, and Hereford steers. The animals were the subject
of her many short stories written for publication later in life.
The site was conveyed and is now the home of Greyhound Friends,
who rescue racing greyhounds for adoption throughout New
England.
She was a well known conservationist, who led a well publicized
fight to control over development in her beloved Hopkinton,
culminating in a town bylaw change victory by special ballot
(though this was overturned by the State). She was a founding
member of the Hopkinton Area Land Trust (HALT) and worked
tirelessly helping to acquire open space parcels from
developers, designing trail and land use plans, and writing for
the organization’s newsletter. She became frequently quoted in
newspapers as other towns sought to control development and
growth.
Later in life she developed a third passion – golf. After
beginning golf lessons on her 60th birthday, she became a quick
study and joined the Ladies Golf League at Indian Meadows in
Westborough. She became the Ladies Champion and held her title
for many years well into her 70’s. She enjoyed the company of
her friends from golf immensely and loved traveling to play on
Cape Cod and New Hampshire, and winning many local “best ball”
tournaments with her friends.
She leaves her two sons; Thomas Fitzpatrick and his wife Regina
of Billerica; and Brian Fitzpatrick and his wife Ginny of Port
St. Lucie, Florida; and five grandchildren – Taylor Fitzpatrick
and Kenneth and Stephen Rogers of Billerica, and Brianna and
Shannon Fitzpatrick of Port St. Lucie, FL. She also leaves a
brother, Donald H. Barr of Laurel, Maryland and several beloved
nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Saturday April 4, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. from the
Callanan-Cronin Funeral Home, 34 Church St. followed by a
funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, 20 Church
Street, at 10:00 a.m. Calling hours at the funeral home will

Willis A. "Will" Bird, 84
HOPKINTON -Willis
A. "Will" Bird, 84, passed away
Sunday,
March 8, 2009, at Mary Ann Morse Nursing Home in Natick, after a
long period of declining health. Born in the Bronx, N.Y., he was
the son of the late Albert Glenn and Ingrid Caroline (Melen)
Bird, and was the beloved husband of Mary Ann (Voltmann) Bird.
He was born on Christmas Day, 1924, and died on the couple's
62nd wedding anniversary.
As a youth
growing up in Winthrop, he was drawn most strongly to the ocean
and to the study of electricity. He and his friends had kayaks
and would explore the islands around Boston Harbor. He was often
invited to act as crew in the sailboat races in the Gloucester
area. The two loves became one after the U.S. entered World War
II, and he found himself in the Navy and spent most of the war
at sea as an electrician's Mate first class, serving in both the
Atlantic and Pacific.
His ship was
the second to reach the doomed Indianapolis, torpedoed in July
1945 with nearly 2,000 men aboard. Only 316 were rescued, and in
his later years, he could never recount the story without
weeping. After the war, he attended colleges in New York and
Boston, earning degrees in electrical and industrial
engineering, and spent most of his career in the field of
electronics in companies from Mass. to Conn., and from Florida
to Western Mass., eventually settling in , Hopkinton, on Lake
Whitehall.
He was
employed by the then-Datatrol, later DdataCard, in Hudson and
retired from there in January 1995.
He was an
avid reader of the Bible, and taught himself Greek and Hebrew to
be able to read the scriptures as originally written. Over the
years, he taught Bible studies in several churches and private
homes, until his failing health prevented it.
He is
survived by his wife, Mary Ann; his daughters, Kathleen "Kathi"
Blais of Weymouth and Patti Ann Bird of Blue Bell, Pa.; his
sons, Robert G. Bird and his wife, Dawn, of Bellingham, and
Terry A. Bird and his wife, Patti of West Palm Beach, Fla; two
granddaughters, Katie Bird and Jennifer Blais; a great-grandson,
Jamison, and a great-granddaughter, Reese, both of Weymouth. He
is also survived by his only brother, Howard G. Bird of Vienna,
Va.
A memorial
service will take place Saturday, April 4, at 1 p.m., at the
Vineyard Church of Hopkinton, 84 South St., Hopkinton. Memorial
gifts in Mr. Bird's name may be made to the Vineyard Church.
Arrangements
were under the direction of the Chesmore
Funeral Home, 57 Hayden Rowe Street, Hopkinton.

Burial services were held at Evergreen Cemetery in Hopkinton. |
